We are honored to announce that the ASSIST Study — a first-of-its-kind multi-center randomized trial in IBD — has been recognized with a joint award from the American Telemedicine Association and the American College of Gastroenterology, for its scientific contribution to improving adherence and outcomes in IBD through remote monitoring. On behalf of the ASSIST Study team, Synchronyx CEO Tamar Sapir, PhD, will present these findings at #NEXUS2025, the premier event advancing virtual care, telehealth, and digital health innovation, May 3rd-6th in Nashville, TN. Led by Dr. Raymond Cross, with co-investigators Dr. Jordan Axelrad, MD, MPH, Dr. Anita Afzali MD, MPH, MHCM, FACG, AGAF, Dr. Sara Horst, Dr. Millie Long, and Dr. Kara DeFelice, the ASSIST Study evaluated the use of Tappt Health, a remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) solution, across five academic IBD centers. This study is among the first randomized controlled trials to rigorously assess the impact of RTM in a chronic disease population. It addressed one of the most persistent challenges in IBD care: nonadherence to therapy, which is often invisible until it leads to costly and avoidable disease flares. By providing real-time adherence data, symptom tracking, and care team alerts between visits, the intervention enabled earlier action and more consistent treatment persistence. A recent JAMA Network Open study highlights a critical challenge in obesity care. While prescriptions for GLP-1 receptor agonists have grown by 5.3% annually, discontinuation rates remain high. Sixty-five percent of patients discontinue therapy within the first year, and only 36% reinitiate. Cost, side effects, and misaligned expectations often lead to treatment gaps, particularly among patients without type 2 diabetes. Compounding this issue is the lack of long-term data on the sustained use of these therapies. While clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of GLP-1 receptor agonists for weight loss, most studies have focused on short-term outcomes, and there is limited real-world evidence on how patients maintain treatment and long-term weight loss over extended periods. As these medications become more widely used, it is essential to develop strategies that support long-term adherence and integration into comprehensive obesity care. This underscores a broader issue—how do we move from short-term prescribing to a sustainable, long-term approach? Addressing obesity as a chronic disease requires more than access to medication. Patients need ongoing engagement, structured support, and coordinated care that integrates primary care providers, specialists, pharmacists, behavioral health experts, and digital health solutions. Without proactive strategies to address adherence barriers, these medications risk falling short of their potential impact.
