A new heart. A second chance. A story of strength, innovation, and the power of community. Just months ago, 10-year-old Lev’Veon was running through sprinklers at a birthday party. Hours later, his heart stopped in the ICU. What followed was nothing short of extraordinary. Lev’Veon faced one of the most extreme cases of myocarditis doctors at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital had ever seen. His heart was beyond repair. No assist device could help. He needed a new heart—but his body wasn’t ready. That’s when the team made a game changing decision: to implant the SynCardia Total Artificial Heart. It had never been done there before—and rarely in a child. What came next was a massive, around-the-clock effort from the Mott team, supported by our engineers and clinical partners. Together, we virtually mapped the surgery, trained specialists across disciplines, and helped prepare for a procedure that had never been attempted on someone so young. And it worked. The Total Artificial Heart gave Lev’Veon the strength and time he needed. Just weeks later, he received a successful heart transplant. Today, he’s back home, dreaming big, and inspiring everyone around him. We’re beyond honored to have played a role in this life-saving journey—and deeply grateful to the team at Mott, and to Lev’Veon’s family for their strength, trust, and unwavering love. We’re excited to see Hans return home on the SynCardia Freedom Portable Driver, where he will continue his journey with the SynCardia Total Artificial Heart (STAH) while awaiting a donor heart! After suffering a heart attack in 2024 and experiencing rapid decline, Hans was placed on ECMO support at UCSF before receiving the STAH on November 18. Now, after 109 days of support, he is taking the next step—regaining mobility and independence at home with the Freedom Driver, while remaining on the transplant list.
