The National Institute for Geo-Informatics Science & Technology (NIGST), under the Survey of India, successfully conducted a two-day online training programme on 24th and 25th March 2025 for officials from the National Hydrology Project (NHP). This training aimed to enhance the technical skills of professionals working on hydrological studies and water resource management across India. The course provided in-depth insights into the fundamental principles of surveying, which are crucial for the accurate collection of data in hydrology. A key focus of the training was on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology, alongside an introduction to Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) networks. These technologies are essential for precise geospatial data collection, particularly in hydrological surveys, where accuracy in mapping and monitoring water bodies is critical. The course also covered the use of Total Station and Levelling techniques, which are fundamental for topographic surveys and ensuring precise ground measurements essential for effective water resource management. This training programme was a collaborative effort, equipping participants with hands-on knowledge of modern surveying technologies and methodologies. The Survey of India extends congratulations to all participants and instructors for their active engagement and commitment to enhancing their skills. The successful completion of this training highlights NIGST’s dedication to building technical expertise and supports India's broader efforts in strengthening water resource management through advanced geospatial technologies. On World Water Day, we recognise the essential role water plays in sustaining life. The Survey of India, as the nation's leading geospatial and mapping agency, plays a key role in managing and conserving water resources. By utilising advanced technologies such as satellite imagery, drone-based surveys, and geographic information systems (GIS), the Survey of India contributes significantly to mapping water bodies, monitoring fluctuations in water levels, and assessing the distribution and availability of water resources nationwide. In accordance with the National Geospatial Policy-2022, the Survey of India generates up-to-date, accurate geospatial data that supports effective water resource management. Through detailed mapping of water bodies, flood plains, and groundwater reserves, the organisation aids government bodies and policymakers in making informed decisions on water conservation, distribution, and disaster preparedness. As part of its commitment to national water sustainability goals, the Survey of India has executed key projects under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and the National Hydrology Project (NHP). These initiatives have enhanced river basin management, supported clean water missions, and strengthened hydrological data systems across the country. By contributing to the development of a comprehensive national water management strategy, the Survey of India plays a vital role in addressing challenges such as water scarcity, drought, and flooding. Its efforts support environmental protection, sustainable development, and disaster response—ensuring India’s water resources are safeguarded for generations to come.
