Faith in humanity restored. This post is to give thanks to Stephen. Yesterday, I visited a skilled nursing community. Its sidewalk was covered in thick ice, the super slippery kind. I asked the receptionist if I could return to remove it. I returned with a pick and began work at 3:37pm. The first hour was a blast, waving to passersby and the families, ambulatory and community staff entering and exiting the driveway. Then, Stephen and his significant other approached and asked if I could use a hand. They live next door in a rent-controlled apartment building and he said he’d be happy to help. He returned ten minutes later with a snow shovel and a hatchet. Another of his neighbors even jumped in for a few minutes. The ice grew thicker (5-6in) as the sun set. We kept at it. We cleared the sidewalk at 6:30pm. Exhausted and with every muscle sore and cramping, we high-fived, thanked one another and parted ways. Here were the lessons I learned: 1. Do more for others without expecting anything in return. There is no greater inner sense of accomplishment. 2. It’s okay to ask for and/or accept help. Without Stephen’s generosity and effort, I honestly wouldn’t have finished the job. No way. 3. Engage others and take advice. As it was getting dark, a gentleman approached who we believed was homeless. He recommended we toss some hot water on the ice. He said he did that’s how he did it when he was a kid, and it got underneath the ice and softened it. We tried it and it worked, likely saving us at least an hour. Thank you, kind stranger. 4. Don’t stop until the job is done. I’m not in great shape so I type this with swollen fingers, black and blue palms with aching arms and back. I believe my friend, Francis LeGasse Jr, refers to this as “healing through suffering”. We never took a break. I may have shed a tear or two. This project was a gift - exactly what I needed in this moment. Pain, humility, perspective, perseverance. It has been a trying start to 2025. Family medical scare, devastating fires in California threatening loved ones and humbling results at work. People are all that matter. Healthcare heroes, thank you for caring for our aging population. I genuinely love you and honor you everyday. First responders, thank you for your awesome effort. I can’t find the words that accurately describe how grateful we all are for the thousands of lives and structures you continue to save. Stephen, thank you for giving me faith yesterday. You wore a smile through it all. I will return today to join you in hopes we can make the parking lot safer for the staff and families. Superb Shifts
