🎊 We are very proud to announce the 12 Ukrainian cities selected as SUN4Ukraine Flagship Municipalities to pave the way toward climate neutrality by 2050:  - Chernihiv   - Chernivtsi   - Dnipro    - Kalush   - Kharkiv   - Konotop   - Kyiv   - Mykolaiv    - Novovolynsk   - Pervomaisk   - Vinnytsia   - Zviahel  🎙️Lesya Tymochenko, coordinator of SUN4Ukraine, shared: “We were impressed with the high level of interest and a number of quality applications from Ukrainian cities.  The project selection committee had a hard time when selecting the target 10 Flagship Municipalities so we decided to increase the number to 12 to acknowledge the effort the cities put into applications and their overall commitment to climate neutrality. 🌿 Benefits of a climate-neutral city #8 –Less waste, lower costs    🤔Did you know?  🍃 Reducing waste in our cities not only benefits the environment but also reduces municipal services costs. This means more funds can be allocated to vital areas like healthcare, education, and housing. ♻️ For example, minimising waste can significantly decrease our energy consumption, especially as energy prices continue to rise. By using recycled materials to create new products, we consume less energy compared to manufacturing from raw resources like trees, fossil fuels, or metal ores. 💰And there’s more, waste management can generate revenue, turning challenges into opportunities for cities! 📌 Want to learn more? 📣 Last but not least, we are proud to present our 12th Flagship Municipality: Zviahel! 📍 Located in Northern Ukraine, on the Sluch river, Zviahel is composed of 1 city and 14 villages, counting 57,909 inhabitants. 🎙️ Mykola Borovets, Mayor of Zviahel, shares with us the first milestones undertaken to lead the municipality on the road to sustainability and his long-term expectations. “One of the top priorities for our municipality is to improve energy efficiency, develop renewable energy sources and adapt to climate change. We have already adopted a renewable energy development program and are actively working on a new Municipal Energy Plan. In our long-term perspective, we want to achieve an ambitious goal of becoming a climate-neutral municipality. However, for a qualitative assessment of the municipality's potential, development and planning of appropriate measures, the municipality needs qualified expert support and study of the best practices of European municipalities. 🌿 Benefits of a climate-neutral city #6 – Improvement of cities' attractiveness 💡 56% of the world’s population lives in cities, and this trend is expected to continue. By 2050, nearly 7 of 10 people will live in cities (World bank, 2023). This rapid urban growth highlights the need for cities to embrace sustainable practices, not only to address environmental challenges, but also to boost their attractiveness. A climate-neutral city can attract: 1️⃣ Economic growth: through green innovations in sectors like construction, renewable energy, and mobility 2️⃣ New investments in sustainable industries 3️⃣ Tourism with green spaces and nature reserves becoming major attractions 4️⃣ New populations, as sustainable cities appeal to skilled workers 📌 Want to learn more? 📣 This week, we are proud to present a new Flagship Municipality: Vinnytsya! 📍 Located in West-Central Ukraine, on the banks of the Southern Bug river, Vinnitsya is composed of 1 city and 8 villages, counting 402,830 inhabitants. 🎙️ Vladyslav Skalskyi, Deputy Mayor of Vinnytsia, shares with us his pride at having been selected, as well as the initial steps that have already been made as part of the Green Deal. “I am pleased that Vinnytsia has become a part of SUN4Ukraine, which is aimed at supporting Ukrainian cities in achieving climate neutrality. Shortly before the start of the full-scale invasion, our community became the first in Ukraine to proclaim the Green Deal, and despite the challenges of war, we continue to work in this area, as we are convinced that Ukraine's further recovery should be in alignment with the principles of this document. Working within this strategic path, we have covered various areas of our municipal life: urban mobility, energy efficiency and transition to renewable energy, creation of green jobs and development of a circular economy, education of residents and cooperation with international partners in terms of climate change adaptation and reduction of human impact on the environment. We will also be happy to share our experience and receive guidance from new partners on how to build a better sustainable quality of life". 💡 Through SUN4Ukraine, Vinnitsya is setting the stage for climate neutrality by 2050, leveraging international partnerships and innovative climate action strategies to ensure a greener, resilient, and thriving future.
