Advancing mental health access for all by offering comprehensive training, tools, and support for clinicians
About us
Under the leadership of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (also known as UT Health San Antonio), the STRONG STAR Training Initiative (SSTI) extends cutting-edge research from the STRONG STAR Consortium in PTSD treatment for military personnel and veterans by providing competency-based training in evidence-based treatments (EBTs) to veteran-serving, licensed mental health providers. Training is conducted in the form of a Learning Community, ensuring clinicians have the education, support, and resources they need to become experts in providing PTSD treatment. SSTI focuses on two primary impacts: (1) increase clinician expertise in EBTs for PTSD, and (2) reduced suffering of individuals with PTSD treated by EBTs for PTSD by SSTI trained clinicians. Our ultimate goal is to expand the workforce of licensed mental health providers trained in EBTs so that veterans and everyone in need have access to quality behavioral health care in their communities. -- This page is not monitored 24/7. Be the reason a veteran gets the help they need. 🇺🇸 Read below about how one community member put his suicide prevention training into action. "I am so grateful for this training. Our team recently saw a veteran in crisis. Thankfully, we had someone at the veteran’s location able to intervene using a Crisis Response Plan. With our support, this veteran client was able to get through the crisis and planned to go to counseling that same week with his wife and son." — John "JD" Morris, Veteran Ally Crisis Response Planning (CRP) is a research-backed approach to help veterans in crisis find safety, hope, and support. As we approach the end of #WomensHistoryMonth, we want to recognize powerful PTSD research led by our Director of Inclusive Behavioral Health Advancement, Dr. Brittany Hall-Clark! ✨ Dr. Hall-Clark and her team conducted a large systematic review to determine how PTSD symptoms show up differently across different racial and ethnic groups. Key Takeaways: ❗️ Trauma exposure is complex and different cultural groups tend to experience different types of traumatic experience (e.g., political violence vs. neighborhood violence) ❗️ Cultural variations in PTSD symptom expression are real, and clinicians should be mindful of differences in expressive language when assessing for and treating PTSD ❗️ Socioeconomic status and prior traumatic experience are important treatment considerations because they can impact access to helpful resources To provide truly effective and inclusive PTSD treatment, we must understand and respect cultural differences in our communities. Sincere thanks to Dr. Hall-Clark and all women working to advance equity in mental health care!
