Congratulations to Yellow Cluster teacher Allison Pearlman for receiving a 2025 Educator Award from Xavier High School! Established over a decade ago, the Xavier Educator Awards recognize outstanding teachers who have significantly influenced the development of current Xavier students. Ms. Pearlman received the award when one of her former students, Gaynor alum Nicolas F., wrote an essay about her titled, “My Favorite Teacher.” Nicolas’ essay was selected as one of the best, so both he and Ms. Pearlman received awards for their work. About us
A pioneer in special education founded in 1962, Stephen Gaynor School is an independent Pre-K, Lower, and Middle School for bright children with language-based learning differences. At Stephen Gaynor School, students with learning differences develop essential academic and critical thinking skills through individualized and evidence-based approaches, empowering them to reach their full potential. Students learn to advocate for themselves and others while actively building an inclusive community, a sense of belonging, and a belief in their own possibilities. Gaynor serves approximately 390 students with language based learning differences, such as dyslexia or expressive/receptive language difficulty. We are also able to support students with overlapping attentional or executive functioning challenges (such as ADHD). Stephen Gaynor School students have a strong cognitive profile but often have difficulty with the acquisition of reading and writing skills. Our highly trained and dedicated teachers, specialists, and administrators create a climate of caring where students feel comfortable taking academic risks, secure in the knowledge that their educational journey is accompanied by success. Stephen Gaynor School’s faculty and administration strive to develop self-confident, self-aware learners who can advocate for their own needs and have respect for themselves and others. Students leave Gaynor with a rich foundation of knowledge, confidence, and pride in their achievements, and strategies that will sustain them for a lifetime. This morning, 15 educators from 8 different independent and public schools attended Gaynor’s Sentence and Paragraph Strategies to Enhance Student Writing workshop led by Writing Chair, Jackie Glazer. Participants of the workshop gained practical tools and innovative approaches to foster their students’ growth as writers. One teacher said, "I left the workshop feeling empowered with turn-key specific strategies and best practices, how to adapt techniques in my 4th grade classroom, and how to share my new-found knowledge with others.” Want to bring this type of professional development to your school? According to a new report by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (#NAEP), the percentage of fourth graders at a “below basic” reading level is at 40 percent, the worst it has been in 20 years. However, in states like Louisiana where they have committed to teaching the science of reading, students made significant gains. Gaynor's reading approach has always been rooted in the science of reading and through our CLC and Reading Professional Development Program, we are sharing this knowledge to support NYC public school students and teachers. In fact, 100% of second graders who are part of our CLC graduate the program reading on grade level and on the path to long-term academic success, and 100% of teachers who participate in the PD report improvements in their students' reading skills. #reading #scienceofreading #nycschools https://lnkd.in/eWtM5hEz

In the past week, Gaynor was honored to present two workshops on the topic of Developing Executive Functions Across the Academic Environment at The Caedmon School and at PS 87. Led by our Assistant Head of School Jill Thompson, these workshops shared strategies to embed and strengthen executive functions with elementary aged students. In addition to learning evidence-based techniques to bring into the classroom, participants played a rousing game of Headbanz to demonstrate the organization of information and mapped out self-regulation spaces they could create. To learn more about hosting a workshop at your school, see our professional development page for options. https://lnkd.in/daT3tChz #executivefunctions #teacherpd
