We're hoping to meet those challenges as our District adapts as quickly as possible to deal with this invasive mosquito.

The Collier Mosquito Control District (the District) is hiring a Laboratory Technician!! The District exists to control populations of both pestiferous and (potentially) disease-carrying mosquitoes throughout the community in which we all live. Contributing to a healthy, high quality of life in southwest Florida and beyond by upholding public trust, applying sound science, using best practices in mosquito control, economic responsibility, and an enduring search for solutions. The Lab Technician exists primarily to provide support for research and surveillance programs and to maintain research equipment and facilities. This role will involve collaborating across departments as they participate in the design and execution of relevant research projects by assisting in field collection of adult and larval mosquitoes, identifying and cataloging the results, and perform testing of mosquito borne diseases to enhance the District’s integrated pest management (IPM) program.

These past two weeks I had the fantastic opportunity of visiting the amazing team at the PRVCU alongside Dr. Matt DeGennaro. I worked alongside interns Alexandra Rosario, Lilyana Hamerling, Elba Sofie Fridriksson in San Juan, Puerto Rico to understand the need for community outreach and surveillance studies for dengue outbreaks. I am so thankful to the PRVCU director Dr. Grayson Brown and Joanelis Medina Quintana, MS for their hospitality and help in our future projects! I would also like to recognize the PRVCU team and Edgardo Gonzalez,who welcomed the interns and myself, and guided, answered our questions, and provided instruction throughout our field days. It was a fantastic opportunity for greater insight.
