  • Helping Prevent Distracted Driving: A leading cause of motor vehicle accidents, distracted driving can result in serious injuries and fatalities. To raise awareness on the dangers of distracted driving, the South Texas Health System Trauma & Critical Care Institute, in conjunction with Med-Care EMS, shared vital information with Edinburg CISD’s Transportation Department. “Bus drivers are tasked with caring for children while on the road and they see first-hand the effects distracted driving can have on the safety of our kids,” says Bianca Hayes, Trauma Injury Preventionist, STHS McAllen. “Through a special presentation, we were able to offer education on the signs of distracted driving and how to prevent it.” Thank you to Edinburg cisd and Med-Care EMS for giving STHS the opportunity to share this crucial information to our community.

  • Dedicated to Providing Five-Star Patient Care: Across South Texas Health System's 12 facilities across the Rio Grande Valley, our staff understand the obligation the community places on them when entrusting us with their care. In our commitment to positive patient outcomes, it's heart-warming to receive feedback like this Google review from a patient recently treated at STHS ER Weslaco: “Just wanted to share an amazing experience. This morning, I went to ER in Weslaco with massive pain and I was helped out right away by the front desk nurse and then I was put in a waiting room where Sergio RN was very helpful, [courteous] and really nice at helping me out during my not so good time in pain. He showed his [compassion] and love for his patients and the work he does. Very grateful and [God] bless him and all his team. Thank you for the kind words! Your review assures us we’re fulfilling our mission to deliver quality, compassionate care to our patients.

  • Providing Comprehensive Urological Care: From kidney stones to prostate cancer, urology plays a vital role in overall health. Typically, urological health doesn’t receive the attention it deserves until there's a problem. While many urological conditions aren’t life-threatening, some can become serious if left untreated. In its commitment to providing all-encompassing healthcare services, South Texas Health System is proud to welcome Dr. Phillip Kim, MD, a board-certified urology specialist providing comprehensive treatment for the urinary system and male reproductive organs through his practice, Rhize Urology. A member of the American Urological Association (AUA) and a fellow of the Endourological Society, Dr. Kim completed his residency at the University of California, Davis and his fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery/Robotics at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital. “I want to make an impact when it comes to access to urological care in the Rio Grande Valley,” says Dr. Kim. “I feel there are a lot of patients here that need this type of healthcare service in a timely manner and I'm here to provide it.” Dr. Kim's office is in the medical office building next door to STHS Edinburg at 4302 S. Sugar Rd, Suite 201, Edinburg. For more information or to make an appointment, visit https://lnkd.in/exP57kcf or call (956) 452-1643. Welcome to the Rio Grande Valley, Dr. Kim.

  • Honoring a Fallen Hero: South Texas Health System stands with the family, friends and colleagues of Alejandro De Luna, the 40-year-old Border Patrol agent tragically killed in a two-vehicle accident on Tuesday afternoon. To commemorate the life of this fallen hero, STHS McAllen conducted a special honor walk at the facility, where members of the Mission, McAllen and Edinburg police departments, the Texas Department of Public Safety and Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office and constables joined Customs and Border Protection agents for a final farewell. A procession and Border Patrol helicopter flyover followed as the agent's body was transported to a nearby funeral home. STHS would like to offer its deepest sympathy to the family, friends, colleagues and community impacted by this tragic loss.
