  • SoundThinking today announced that ResourceRouter’s customer base more than doubled in 2024, driven by new patrol operations capabilities that provide officers with critical field information and enable agencies to do more with limited staffing. “𝙄’𝙢 𝙖 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙢 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙄 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 50 𝙤𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝙙𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙗𝙪𝙙𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙣𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙮 100, 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙬𝙚’𝙧𝙚 𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙮,” 𝙨𝙖𝙞𝙙 𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙛 𝙅𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙍𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙖, 𝙀𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙜𝙤 𝙋𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝘿𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩. “𝙄 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙨, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙩 45% 𝙤𝙛 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙘𝙚𝙍𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥𝙚𝙙 𝙪𝙨 𝙛𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙜𝙖𝙥. Police staffing shortages are one of the most pressing public safety issues facing the country…but technology can help. Law enforcement agencies across the country are facing a deep workforce crisis. However, the problem isn’t just that departments lost officers - it’s which officers they lost. Post-“defund the police” movements in 2020, the profession saw a rapid decline in new recruits because of anti-police sentiment. At the same time, a wave of highly experienced officers - those just a couple of years away from retirement - chose to leave early. Many of them took roles in private security or in prosecutors’ offices, where they could still contribute to public safety but without the risks of frontline policing. We’re now dealing with the results: A huge exodus of skilled, veteran officers who had spent decades refining their judgment, leadership, and expertise. Losing 10 rookies is not the same as losing 10 officers with 20+ years of experience. Rebuilding this institutional knowledge will take years - but public safety can’t wait. This is where technology plays a critical role as a force multiplier, making: 💪 Agencies more efficient - helping departments do more with fewer resources. 🚔 Policing more effective - ensuring officers respond to the right incidents with real-time intelligence. 🛡️ Public safety more equitable - enabling data-driven decision-making that increases transparency and accountability. We can’t replace experience overnight, but we can equip agencies with the tools to maximize their impact while they rebuild their ranks.

Thomas Chittum, our Senior VP of Forensics, is such a critical part of our team at SoundThinking (formerly ShotSpotter). Why? Our team’s mission isn’t just to detect gunfire, it’s to make sure our technology keeps violent offenders off the streets - and that’s exactly what Tom helps us accomplish. A former Chief Operating Officer at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Tom leads our forensics team, which trains prosecutors in cities where ShotSpotter is deployed. His work is vital - because evidence is only as powerful as the people presenting it in court. By ensuring prosecutors fully understand how ShotSpotter works, Tom helps strengthen their ability to use digital forensics in criminal cases. Tom’s team also owns our detailed forensic reports, tracking the entire chain of custody from the moment a gunshot is detected to its use as courtroom evidence. He and his team ensure that our data is accurate and legally defensible, adding real crime-prevention value beyond gunshot detection. Beyond forensics, Tom is an outstanding writer and communicator. He’s also taken on a key role with our work in Washington, D.C., engaging with lawmakers, law enforcement organizations, and policymakers to help public safety leaders understand the power of forensic technology. Because of Tom’s hard work, he’s amplified SoundThinking (formerly ShotSpotter)’s impact in courtrooms and legislative agendas all over the country. Thanks to his leadership, ShotSpotter isn’t just a tool for detecting gunfire; it’s a tool for delivering justice.

  • Readers of the Columbus Dispatch may have seen a recent article regarding ShotSpotter's effectiveness. At SoundThinking, we want to ensure the public is fully informed about this vital technology – because facts matter. A letter to the editor of the Dispatch published today: The value of ShotSpotter SoundThinking commends The Columbus Dispatch for its thoughtful piece on the value of ShotSpotter in Columbus ("Columbus is on track to spend $6M on ShotSpotter. But is it worth the cost?" March 23). Communities and their leaders need to evaluate the return on investment for any public safety technology. As the CEO of the company that created ShotSpotter, we welcome this scrutiny because we are confident in what the data shows: ShotSpotter saves lives, helps recover critical evidence and brings first responders to the scene of gun violence when time is of the essence. Transparency and accountability are foundational to trust. Too often, gunfire goes unreported, particularly in our most vulnerable communities — research has shown that this can exceed 80%. ShotSpotter ensures that these incidents are not ignored, and that they receive a rapid, professional response they deserve — just as we would expect for an act of violence in more privileged areas. Mr. Thell Robinson suggests that if even one life was saved, the investment in ShotSpotter would be justified. We couldn’t agree more. That is why we created this technology, and why our partners in public safety trust ShotSpotter as part of their life-saving toolkit. And Ohio residents agree. In a recent survey, Fallon Research reported that “gunshot sound appears to be extremely popular across the spectrum of Ohio’s variegated population, which ranks it head-and-shoulders above other tools being considered by cities and police agencies.” Our mission is to support law enforcement and community leaders in responding to gun violence with precision and accountability. We are proud of the role ShotSpotter plays in helping officers locate victims faster, secure evidence for investigations and intervene before additional violence occurs. We stand by our work and our impact and remain committed to working in partnership with communities like Columbus to make public safety smarter, more effective and more equitable. We are growing in LA County! 4 cities lead the way with #ShotSpotter to protect neighborhoods. 🎯 Lancaster 🎯 Lakewood 🎯 Pasadena 🎯 Hawaiian Gardens “ShotSpotter is an instrumental tool in providing the Pasadena Police Department with situational awareness around gunfire incidents. Because such a high percentage of criminal gunfire is otherwise unreported, ShotSpotter is often the sole reason our officers are able to quickly respond to crime scenes, gather evidence, interview witnesses, and deliver medical care,” said Pasadena Police Chief Gene Harris. #publicsafety SoundThinking (formerly ShotSpotter) https://lnkd.in/g4wf2DHc
