About us
Solidaridad invented fair trade coffee. Then we changed the banana market forever by introducing the first sustainable banana brand in the world. Next Solidaridad initiated Made BY, in London, to promote sustainable fashion. Today, Solidaridad is an international organization with more than 45 years of experience in creating fair and sustainable supply chains from producer to consumer. We believe that fair and sustainable trade is a powerful catalyst to reduce poverty, build communities and protect the environment. Solidaridad works across several commodities globally including aquaculture, cocoa, coffee, cotton, dairy, fruits and vegetables, gold, livestock, palm oil, soy, sugarcane, tea, textiles and other agricultural crops. We partner with companies, financial institutions, governments, investors, and other NGOs to develop supply chains with added value that enable producers, such as smallholder farmers and (artisanal) miners, to lift themselves out of poverty. We also foster support among the general public and consumers by building awareness of the opportunities that sustainable trade offers. Solidaridad is a network of 9 regional offices on 5 continents. High coffee prices get the attention they deserve in this piece from Santul Nerkar ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ggsYzM29 👀 While the effects of increasing demand & #ClimateChange are being seen around the world, this particular price run aligns with a consistent boom/bust pattern in coffee. Rampant speculation based on low harvest projections lead to an often short-lived price increase followed by a long spell of low prices. And while it seems that higher prices would be good for farmers, it often works out differently as producer organizations struggle to fulfill contracts & smaller coffee companies attempt to manage the risk. It remains to be seen if high prices are here to stay, but volatile markets – whether high or low – can have a devastating effect smallholder farmers. 🚛 🌱 A week ago, our partner Fundación Proyección Eco-Social accompanied Lácteos La Maporita on its milk pick-up route, connecting with local producers committed to sustainability and strengthening the regional economy while protecting Amazonian ecosystems. 🐄 💚 Drone technology helps us to check the state of the forests and camera trapscapture the rich biodiversity in the vicinity of the farms, reaffirming our commitment to conservation and sustainable development in the heart of the Amazon. 🌳 🦜 🛩️ Production with purpose and action for nature! This work is being done through Amazonia Connect, an initiative of USAID, Solidaridad Network, Earth Innovation Institute, National Wildlife Federation, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In collaboration with USAID's Amazon Regional Environmental Program (#AREP), producers, companies, local governments and financial institutions, Amazonia Connect will promote and scale the adoption of low-carbon agriculture and sustainable commodity production in Brazil, Colombia and Peru.
