Philanthropy is at a pivotal moment as the world shifts in massively consequential ways. These changes can feel abstract and distant from our own lives, but still we can sense the myriad of threats that feel destabilizing and worrisome. Despite the promises of technology, we are becoming increasingly isolated and aware that division and polarization is threatening to undermine our most basic human right: the right to serve humanity and our planet. At The Elevate Prize Foundation, we are driven by the belief that connection leads to compassion and compassion leads to community. Once we feel in community, we feel compelled to protect those around us. A gateway to community building is gathering in person to share experiences and ideas, which is why our time at Skoll Foundation World Forum was deeply meaningful for Elevate. From sharing the stage with the brilliant Nick Kristof, Don Gips of Skoll Foundation, and Doug Galen of Rippleworks to speak on the future of philanthropy, to hosting our first ever High Tea with our Prize winners and funding partners, we wanted everyone who came to build intentional, lasting relationships that can help uplift us all as we weather the storms ahead. I like to believe that what we are now experiencing is a test of our humanity’s deepest need to love one another and that our role in philanthropy (which literally means "love of man") is to sow the seeds of greater love and belonging. Fostering this love and belonging means that we have to fund what others won’t. We know that popular culture - namely digital content, film, TV, and music - helps to shape behavior and systems change – and we cannot achieve lasting social change without shifting the cultural narrative. In that way, I feel extraordinarily privileged to be able to prioritize sharing the life-changing work of Elevate Prize winners with the world through visual storytelling, both at events like Skoll World Forum and online - like in these very LinkedIn posts.

A lot of social change talk revolves around diagnosing the problems. While this is a very important part of innovation and collaboration, it’s not what we do. Instead, we dig into what’s working and what practitioners are learning, taking a deep dive into insights around social entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and scaling innovations. And every month, we write a newsletter gathering up the big takeaways. Some highlights from the most recent edition: ‼️ “No risk doesn’t exist!” - Fabiola Zerbini of Conexsus - Instituto Conexões Sustentáveis exclaimed this during the discussion on how to rethink risk in climate collaboration and funding. 🤯 “I’m tired of talking about the concept. We need to talk about the reality we can present as an Indigenous community. We need to start counting in reality how Indigenous communities contribute.” - Bustar Maitar of EcoNusa Foundation, Indonesia on recognizing what Indigenous communities are doing. 🇮🇩 “We often want to copy European or US models. How can we share more lessons from Indonesia?” - Daniel Nardin of Amazônia Vox on understanding that the West isn’t the only region that has found success, and highlighting contributions from others that align closer to shared realities. Each of these came from the Advancing Climate Action through Solutions Storytelling event we hosted during #SkollWF where global leaders in climate action discussed how to better understand how partnerships can support investments and growth demand in two key climate regions: the Amazon and Indonesia. To get more like this from innovators around the world, sign up for the Solutions Insights Lab newsletter. We’ll deliver deep dives into recent conversations, information on upcoming events, spotlights on some of our most interesting and informative interviews, and more. In response to mounting global challenges and critical gaps in resources for the solutions, philanthropy must take a page from social innovators’ book. 📖 At the #SkollWF, funders came together to encourage their peers to move quickly in implementing new and better ways of working that enable philanthropy to rapidly respond to our current moment. During a packed session titled, “Philanthropy at a Crossroads: Can We Fund at the Speed of Innovation?” panelists offered several ways for funders to do so. From doubling down on regional collaboration to taking more risks to increasing total grantmaking, Binaifer Nowrojee, John Palfrey, Kate Hampton, Olivia Leland, and Naina Subberwal Batra had plenty of inspiring ideas. We’re at a crossroads; how might you adapt? 🔀
