In telecoms, we got used to stunning growth rates in adoption, performance, coverage, revenues, investment. It was awesome to be part of it, but this is not a sustainable model in the long term. So we have grown up into a more mature industry, which has some advantages, but also much more contained growth rates. No amount of technology can fix that. It is a macroeconomic trend over which we cannot exert too much control. How do we learn to survive and succeed in this new environment? I talked with Joel Brand at Marvell Technology about this; it was a refreshing and inspiring discussion. We are midway in our 5G journey. It may not have been as game-changing as many expected, but it did improve connectivity, and it is an impressive new technology. There is ample room for improvement, this much is clear. What can we learn from the beginnings of 5G to continue the innovation? What should we do differently?
