    Hi, my name is Bernard I am probably not the person you expected to see on your feed, but let me explain. This was me at 17. Like many people, I was lost. But this was the fuel that gave me the boost to change: 📌 U.S. Army Drill Sergeants that would not let me quit, no matter how badly I wanted to. Thank you, Gary Berkley and Darren Hargrove. 📌 A Sergeant who drove me to the education center to sign up for college classes, no matter how many times I told him, “I’m not smart enough for college.” Thank you, Jason Durr. 📌 A Staff Sergeant who made me compete for promotion boards even though I told her, “I’m not confident in public speaking.” Thank you, Tyiesha Williams-Reynolds. 📌 A Sergeant who helped me in my darkest hours when I couldn’t pay my bills. Thank you, Anthony (Tony) Forker. 📌 A Sergeant First Class who told me, “I like your gold teeth, but the world deserves to see your authentic smile.” Thank you, Mrs. Fancher. 📌 A Major who pushed me to train while injured (sometimes you have to play while hurt) to become one of the top 10% of US Army ROTC cadets in the U.S. Thank you, Kernaa McFarlin. None of these people looked alike. They all came from different backgrounds, but they were all servant leaders. Service— This is how we take people at rock bottom and use that as the foundation to build their lives. Please pay it forward ⏩

    The Coldest, Darkest Days—And the Cadets Who March Through Them (and Break World Records…) Statistically, this is the coldest week of the year at West Point. The Hudson Valley wind cuts like a knife, the sun barely makes an appearance, and the days blend into a relentless cycle of gray. This is the Gloom Period—a test of endurance, not just of the body, but of the mind and spirit. For cadets, there is no break. No holiday to look forward to. No real respite from the grind. It is one of the most mentally and physically grueling stretches of their 47-month journey. As a former grad, I can tell you—this was one of the hardest times to be at West Point. And yet, what did over 2,000 Cadets decide to do at 10 p.m. on a freezing night? They chose to march. Not just any march—the Norwegian Foot March (Marsjmerket), a brutal test of endurance and willpower, rooted in a century-old Norwegian military tradition. • Distance: 18.6 miles (30 km) • Load: 25-pound rucksack (11.3 kg) • Time Limit: Under 4.5 hours • Reward: A foreign military badge, but more importantly, an unshakable bond of shared struggle This is not a requirement. No one forced them to do it. They chose this suffering, together, in the dead of night—because that is what warriors do. My son, Parker finished in just about 4 hours. At 2:05 a.m., he called me, exhausted but proud. I could hear it in his voice. The fatigue. The pride. The quiet realization of just how much he is capable of. And he was not alone. • 2,230 Cadets marching • 220 Cadets supporting • 18.6 miles, 1,375 feet of elevation, 25 lbs on their backs • 32 degrees, rain+snow - 100% By any measure, this was brutal. And by every measure, it was incredible. And in the midst of this already legendary night, another cadet made history—setting a World Record for the fastest completion of the Norwegian Foot March. In the harshest of conditions, he pushed himself beyond what had ever been done before. A West Point Cadet. This is how they forge themselves—through challenge, perseverance, and grit. They march into the darkness so they can lead in the light. There is no place else in America where young people choose hardship like this, together, for something greater than themselves. And now, relief is in sight. Starting this week, the days will start getting longer. The sun will begin to return. Warmer days will come, and with them, more tests, more victories, more moments like this that prove—they’ve got this. The making of the Long Gray Line. America’s future leaders. Cut straight from the hardened granite of their rockbound highland home.

    Ok…I’ve been thinking for a couple of days about something that I am sure many of you will, at first glance, find boring. That’s why I have avoided a title hoping that this will entice you to at least read a little bit further to see if going on is worth you time. So, here goes. Do you know how things get done in your organization? Meaning, do you know the specific set of actions that are taken to produce the products and services that your customers depend on? Do you know what skills and capabilities are required to execute the set of actions resulting in products? Do you know the tools that are used within the set of actions resulting in products? Do you know who is responsible for ensuring that the set of actions are the right ones? That the tools being used are always at hand and ready to go? And, the skills needed are trained and up to date? (This is the BIG one!) Do you know where and how to focus improvement when something goes wrong? Each of these questions is being answered either by random accident or by considered design. Which is it in your organization? What I am proposing here is that every organization needs an operating system. The purpose of an operating system is to ensure that the answers to the above questions are defined and practiced. Interestingly, an operating system already exists. It may be completely random. Parts of the organization may be well defined and executed. Maybe yours is one of the unique places where everything runs like a fine Swiss watch. But, I must ask, where in your organization is it ok to be mediocre or poor? The operating system is intended to build capability in all the areas that are important to the customer’s experience and to your organizational results. An operating system can be reduced to a couple of simple ideas. 1. Everything in your organization happens because of processes, tools, and the skills/capabilities of the organization’s people. 2. The critical processes, tools, and skills/capabilities must be defined, owned and improved by accountable people. 3. Customer and business results are the focus of the operating system. I have included a simple slide below that demonstrates that an operating system doesn’t have to be complex. But, it has to be created and owned.     None of those things matter one whit if leadership is not actively engaged throughout the entire change process. I don't see it mentioned anywhere in the model and it is too foundational to be assumed...g.
