RIECS-Concept starts the initiative to conceptualise Research Infrastructure for Citizen Science.
About us
The RIECS-Concept (Towards A Pan-European Research Infrastructure For Excellent Citizen Science) project officially started on January 1, 2025, thus marking the beginning of an ambitious initiative to build a strong foundation for the future of citizen science in Europe. The project is set for 36 months and will deliver a conceptual design with a feasibility study and a five-year implementation plan. It will tackle technical, societal, and environmental challenges to establish a sustainable and shared Research Infrastructure. The consortium of RIECS-Concept, led by Ibercivis and co-coordinated with ECSA, brings together 13 partners, including key organisations in the field, such as Citizen Science Global Partnership, IIASA, and CSIC. RIECS-Concept aims to conceptualise the new research infrastructure in Europe through the engagement of multiple stakeholders and acknowledging society as a part of the research infrastructure. The projects will bridge typical citizens‘ used resources, such as mobile apps, amateur scientific kits or personal accessibility, with professional scientific resources, such as databases, federated computing and storage facilities, citizen science platforms, and dedicated personnel. The RIECS-Concept will form the base for initiating the unique research infrastructure and consolidating citizen science in Europe. The RIECS-Concept focuses on three scientific areas – environmental observations, health, and climate change – to facilitate engagement and address cross-cutting issues. These areas serve as a basis for examining citizen science as a scientific case. The European Union’s HORIZON EUROPE Research and Innovation programme funded the project under grant agreement No. 101188210.

☘️ April is #CitizenScienceMonth - an invitation to connect, contribute and shape the science of tomorrow. At RIECS-Concept we are proud to take part by celebrating the people, practices and perspectives that are driving #citizenscience forward❗️ 🗓️ “Citizen Science Month highlights the power of people taking action. For me, it’s about making citizen science more visible, more accessible, and more impactful. It’s about reaching new audiences and perspectives.” - Fermín Serrano Sanz (Fundación Ibercivis) 👥 “Citizen Science empowers people from all walks of life to collaborate, explore, and contribute meaningful knowledge that drives change. For me, Citizen Science Month is about celebrating the collective effort and passion of communities, while also striving to engage more people, broadening the reach and impact of citizen science”. - Franziska Stressmann (ECSA - European Citizen Science Association) ‼️Stay tuned and join our activities as #CitizenScienceMonth unfolds❗️ #citscimonth #participatoryscience #OpenScience #horizonEU #PublicEngagement

📢 Official kick-off of RIECS-Concept in Brussels ❗️ The RIECS-Concept (Towards A Pan-European Research Infrastructure For Excellent Citizen Science) officially kicked off on 30 January 2025 in Brussels. The meeting was a good start for discussing not only the objectives and closest tasks to be conducted by the partners but also the interrelations between the tasks and the consortium partners. Co-coordinated by Fundación Ibercivis and ECSA - European Citizen Science Association, the consortium launched an ambitious initiative to lay a strong foundation for the future of citizen science in Europe. The event brought together partners from eight European countries: 🇪🇸Spain, 🇩🇪Germany, 🇦🇹Austria, 🇸🇪Sweden, 🇮🇹Italy, 🇷🇸Serbia, 🇱🇹Lithuania, and 🇨🇭Switzerland. ✅ During the meeting, @Katharina Buse, the representative of the EC and PO of the project, addressed project, financial and dissemination management issues. ✅ Fermín Serrano Sanz, the project coordinator from Ibercivis, reminded the initiation of the project when the consortium quickly evolved with strong support from key actors in citizen science. The potential of the citizens in the field is underestimated, and RIECS-Concept wants to challenge it. In the project, the research infrastructure will be conceptualised, aiming to make citizen science more sustainable. 🇪🇺RIECS-Concept is funded by the call HORIZON-INFRA-2024-DEV-01-01 - Research infrastructure concept development CSIC, OeAD-GmbH – Agentur für Bildung und Internationalisierung, Zentrum für soziale Innovation, Ars Electronica, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Malmö University, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, Centar za promociju nauke, VILNIUS TECH - Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Citizen Science Global Partnership, University of Zurich Kristina Kovaite, Pablo Bes Alonso, Barbara Kieslinger, Francisco Sanz, Franziska Stressmann, Wu Kai-Ti🦋, Jaume Piera, Petra Siegele, Teresa Schaefer, David Cuartielles, Paulius Šūmakaris, PhD, Rosy Mondardini, Dilek Fraisl, Katya Perez Guzman, Carl Magnus Olsson, Bojan Kenig, Elisabeth Schauermann, Nuria Izaga, Vanessa Hannesschläger, Karen Soacha, Dorte Riemenschneider, Jorge Barba Dario Salvi, Enrico Guarini, Elisabetta Marafioti, Veronika Liebl #citizenscience #riecs
