Thank you to our presenters, partners at Texas Robotics and the UT Lab for Immersive Media, and to everyone who attended for making this another great symposium! Over two days, we explored the complexities of ethical AI through demos and research presentations, insightful keynotes and engaging discussions on topics like fairness in AI-based decision-making, the tension between AI advancements and democracy and the future of autonomous vehicles. The dynamic exchange of ideas underscored the importance of interdisciplinary and cross-sector approaches as we work together toward shaping ethical, responsible AI systems. #EthicalAI #AIResearch #GoodSystemsSymposium #WhatStartsHere #ItStartsWithResearch #TEXASResearch #TexasAI

🧠 What if we could map the human brain—every connection, every pathway, every signal? That’s the goal behind the National Institutes of Health’s ambitious BRAIN CONNECTS initiative, and UT Austin psychology professor, Franco Pestilli, is at the forefront of this revolutionary effort. Dr. Pestilli has received new NIH funding to co-lead The Axonal Projectome Exchange (APEX) — a data coordinating center (DCC) that will help manage, process, and share brain data on a massive scale. Using AI, cloud computing, and supercomputing, APEX will support one of science’s biggest “moonshot” missions: to map brain connectivity in rodents, non-human primates, and eventually, humans. To put it in perspective: one brain can hold up to 2 petabytes of data — that’s the equivalent of 1,000 computer hard drives. With APEX and the NIH’s support, Dr. Pestilli and his collaborators are not only advancing brain science but also reinforcing the critical role of liberal arts leadership in scientific innovation. 👏 Join us in celebrating this bold step forward! 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gZmKcn5X The University of Texas at Austin #TexasLiberalArts #UTCOLA #Neuroscience #BrainResearch #BRAINCONNECTS #FrancoPestilli #NIH #BigData #AI #ScientificInnovation #WhatStartsHereChangesTheWorld

🔎 What happens when Longhorns tackle real-world foreign policy issues? Impact. Through the U.S. Department of State's Diplomacy Lab, The University of Texas School of Law students conducted an in-depth study of international child hosting programs—shedding light on regulatory gaps and providing actionable policy recommendations. This project marks the Law School’s first-ever Diplomacy Lab collaboration, with students applying classroom knowledge to shape conversations at the national level. 📖 Read the full story in our Newsroom to see how they're advancing diplomacy and child welfare: https://utx.global/3Y6YIHB. Talia Stroud is leading the most comprehensive research on how social media algorithms shape democracy. Her work with Meta during the 2020 U.S. election revealed that while algorithms strongly influence the content people see, changing them didn’t shift users’ political attitudes — raising critical questions about the long-term impact of digital platforms on civic life. At UT, researchers like Stroud are working across disciplines and industries — pushing for transparency, evidence-based policy and a deeper understanding of how technology influences society.
