A confession: My primary job isn’t running video game companies. That’s actually my second job. My primary job? I’m a full-time pancreas. My middle daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was 5. The onboarding experience was brutal. On Friday, life is normal. 24 hours later – you’re responsible for injecting a lethal drug (insulin) into your kid at precise doses 20+ times a day. Or… coma. It took us a year of trial-and-error on our own kid to understand how to manage this disease – and that’s for a computer engineer and a pediatrician. I don’t know how the muggles do it. I didn’t sleep much that year. As a therapeutic exercise, I wrote a journal analyzing the experience from my unique perspective as a videogame developer. Just published it as a blog: The Worst. Game.
