The Visa / Mastercard settlement in the US is eventually highly likely to be rejected. The litigation has started about 20 years ago... For both payment giants, this litigation is more than a standard litigation. It's about protecting and defending their very "juicy" model. A model that is giving them up to 3,5% of the transaction amount according to this article. A model that merchants have been challenging lately, not only in the US but also in the UK and continental Europe. A model that severely erodes the profitability and the Ebita of merchants. Any merchants. Big or small. Question being, what justifies a 3,5% commission on a transaction.... ? #payment #cardfees #merchantfees #competition https://lnkd.in/efK5tWuJ.

Comment faire accepter l'inacceptable ? “In 2023, hoteliers will pay the top OTAs and bed banks $50 billion in commissions and markups,” Max Starkov wrote. A staggering amount!” Another interesting question would be : "How much will hotel companies pay financial institutions, banks, acquirers and other payment solutions providers for payment acceptance related costs.. ? As cost of payment is definitely an - overlooked - component of the cost of distribution. https://lnkd.in/gbeqhpCC #merchants #payments #cards #costofdistribution

Should merchants apply credit cards surcharges ? 💰 A recent report conducted by the Payment System Regulator in the UK showed that Visa & Mastercard would have "raised their fees by 30% in the last five years, with no corresponding increase in service quality." 🛑 Applying a surcharge on certain means of payment is then a logical and natural response to this price pressure. ( 🚫 unless merchants simply decide to stop accepting certain payment methods 🚫 ). Implementing it is sometimes challenging though because there is a lack of consistency on surcharging rules in a given territory or market. For example, in the EU, surcharging rules may vary between member states and do not apply consistently on all cards. Similarly, in the US, surcharging principles are different from one state to the other. 💡 However, applying a surcharge remains interesting if a merchant wants to invite a customer to use a means of payment rather than another one, more costly e.g. 💡 Another way, less intuitive, to partially offset those important costs, consists in applying a "subcharge" instead of a surcharge. In other words, if a consumer is paying with a certain payment method, they will be offered a discount. And it will create consumer satisfaction. Interesting article of Danielle Kutchel in The Law Society of NSW Journal about this complex topic. #payment #surcharge #surcharging #merchants #costofpayment #psd2 #psd3 European Union European Payments Council (EPC) EACT - European Association of Corporate Treasurers AFTE - The French Association Of Corporate Treasurers Reserve Bank of Australia https://lnkd.in/e_TDGM-E
