  • 💡 #PUBLICHEALTHSKILLS Hi, Vanessa here! After reviewing ~20 resumes of individuals affected by the FedGov stop work order, here are my top recommendations (in no particular order and non-exhaustive). 1. Use a streamlined resume template- if you're leaving Federal, 2-pages is the standard. In our Public Health Resources google drive, https://lnkd.in/ehbG-ijv, check out the Resume Templates folder for our template. Please don't request edit access- you can download the documents with view access! 2. Remove your GPA 3. As you’re looking to pivot into a non-Federal career, make sure you resume is optimized for the types of orgs (healthcare tech company, local/state, nonprofit, university, etc) by: *Removing hours worked, GS-Levels or equivalencies, job contact name/phone/email *Changing program specific language i.e. instead of DREAMS Program (the PEPFAR program which stands for 'Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-Free, Mentored, Safe) write 'prevention program with evidence-based solutions to reduce high HIV incidence rates among adolescent girls and young women' or spell out the acronym if it's interpretable. 4. Add a Professional Summary that is tailored to the role you're seeking (see template in google drive for example). 5. Bullets should be quantified where feasible and focused on results/accomplishments. If you have very lengthy bullets condense them- focus on what's most relevant. Lead with action verbs. 6. A 'Skills' section or 'Core Competencies & Skills' section should be on the first page above 'Professional Experience.' Group your skills and make sure they are specific. The 'how' of the skills should be within the experience bullets. Skills may be tailored to a 'Key Accomplishments' section for certain roles/more senior applicants. 7.If you have an extensive list of publications and presentations- unless you’re applying to research/manuscript writing roles or roles where these deliverables are explicitly stated, just include a selection of them and consider linking to your ORCID etc. Bonus 1: Start with strategy- conduct a through evaluation of your values, strengths, interests, skill gaps, and work preferences, followed by sourcing some initial roles/organizations to explore before delving into your Resume, LinkedIn, and Cover Letter revamp. Bonus 2: Lean into your network-the reality is that you're more likely to get an interview when you were referred to the job then if cold call applying. Don't be afraid to ask a colleague, friend, family member, or stranger for a referral- of course not everyone can provide a referral and how you approach this will vary but one piece of advice is relevant for all- make it easy for them to refer you! Note: I am no longer doing these free reviews, but I've linked in the comments the original post that has all the free resources compiled by some amazing individuals who continue to provide free #publichealth job searching resources. Sending love and light to all!
