When I first started building automations 4 years ago, I approached each build with one goal in mind: solve the problem completely. Every path. Every outcome. Every exception accounted for. The result? Overengineered automations that were hard to maintain and even harder to improve. If too much changed, things would break - and I'd have to start over. Debugging became a job in itself. Managing all the moving parts was time-consuming. Over time, I’ve learned to solve for 70% instead. That means focusing on the most common, high-impact areas - the busy work that consumes most of our time. Edge cases will always exist, and I’ve learned they’re usually better handled by a human. This approach reduces errors, simplifies debugging, and shortens run times. Best of all, it makes automation easier to evolve - because with a solid foundation, you can add improvements without the risk of starting over. 💡 My advice: Automate where it makes sense. Leave the overly complex stuff for people. Evolve as you go.

Your donation form isn’t just a credit card form. It’s the first impression, the “Do I trust you with my money?” moment. Today, we're talking about Blackbaud’s forms. They're smart, streamlined, and they even accept Apple Pay - woo! Because your donors shouldn’t need a desktop and a magnifying glass to give... https://hubs.ly/Q03fYYxw0

Austen Brown dropping the wisdom! 👀
A common fear is that automation will replace people. But in reality, automation is a tool - one that enhances roles, not eliminates them. Take donor acknowledgement letters, for example. We can automate the entire process - initial data clean-up, determining letter codes and delivery methods, merging conditionally, routing letters - but human oversight is still needed. Someone needs to review the final output, ensure accuracy and consistency, and, most importantly, continue to refine the automation over time. The goal isn't to remove people from the process - it's to remove inefficiencies. Instead of spending hours manually merging data into 20+ letter templates each week, automation frees up your time so you can focus on more valuable work, projects that require strategy, analysis, and insight. Don't let fear hold you back from the joy of never having to do tedious manual tasks ever again. #Automation #NonProfitTech #WorkSmarter
