Great to see Samir Mayekar, Associate Vice President and Managing Director of the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, representing Polsky in this thoughtful conversation hosted by the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics. 👏 👏
Thanks to the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics for convening a riveting discussion on “AI, the Economy and Public Policy”. I was pleased to share insights from the Polsky Center at the University of Chicago & my days in City Government and shared the stage with colleagues Caroline Ross Grossman Sanjog Misra and Anders Humlum and our guest Alex Tamkin from Anthropic. Some interesting insights: - AI could drive a 7% increase in global GDP over the next decade…Widespread adoption of AI could contribute 1.5% to annual productivity growth over a ten-year period. - Over 40% of global venture capital funding last year was invested in AI related companies - Anders newest research highlighted a 10%+ gap in usage of AI tools between men/women in the same function/indsutry - Anthropic showed usage patterns on how workers in different indsutry use LLM tools…high usage with programmers and software developers, lowest usage in manufacturing and people-to-people sectors (retail, medicine). - Sanjog highlighted some interesting use cases on how AI could help residents navigate government forms/paperwork to help them better tap into benefits programs - Caroline moderated the discussion and asked group to comment on the human AI interface and pros/cons of increased interaction It was an interesting dialogue with 100+ students, faculty, and alumni here on campus.
