🗞 IN THE NEWS 🗞 "The United States and Australia share a deep and enduring commitment to freedom and security," said Adm. Bill Houston, Director of the U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. “We are a maritime nation, and our nuclear-powered submarines provide an asymmetric advantage that is defending American and allied interests 24/7 – anywhere, anytime.” More than 150 Australian civilians are under instruction at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility to gain the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to maintain submarines. Last month, four Australian civilian maintenance technicians graduated from the U.S. Navy’s Radiological Controls Technician Qualifying School (RCTQS), demonstrating significant progress in developing Australia's nuclear expertise and stewardship. Enhancing defense #readiness through collaboration with our #AlliesAndPartners demonstrates we're reinforcing maritime #lethality in the Indo-Pacific with our #warfighting capabilities. #AUKUS 🔗: https://lnkd.in/e2iNXjcN

#STEMsaturday: The future is bright & BLUE ☀️🧑🔬💙 At the recent #OnizukaDay of Exploration event in Hawai'i, #PHNSYSTEM shared the science of cyanotypes—prints made with UV-light-sensitive dye—to spark curiosity in young minds. Before advanced instrumentation, chemists needed to be able to see a reaction or its results, usually by monitoring changes in color. In the shipyard, we use colorful chemistry to figure out if certain elements are present in various things. From testing potable water samples or identifying the alloy a component is made from using a series of reactions, our #NoKaOiWorkforce volunteered to teach that same chemistry through this interactive art activity. Volunteering at events like this is our way of investing in tomorrow’s explorers. #LaulimaNavy | #NavalSTEM | #PHNSYIMF 📸: Julia Cramer

#OTDIH: From Tragedy to Triumph The loss of USS Thresher (SSN 593) on April 10, 1963, was an event of profound loss in our history. However, from this tragedy, came an unmatched commitment to submarine safety. US Navy developed the SUBSAFE program, a comprehensive safety system that has helped safeguard countless submariners since. With a strict focus on hull integrity, flooding recovery, and continual training, SUBSAFE has ensured that no SUBSAFE-certified submarine has ever been lost. #OTD we remember the brave 129 who gave their lives and reflect on how far we’ve come in submarine safety with a record that stands as a testament to their legacy. From the Dry Docks, to our caissons, to some serious lifting tech, we had an awesome time hosting 11 members from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Hawaii Section Younger Member Forum (YMF) at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard & IMF, March 11, 2025. Our #PHNSYSTEM engineers gave visitors an inside look at some of the infrastructure projects at Pearl, including Dry Dock 5. At #NoKaOiShipyard, we cultivate innovation, support impactful infrastructure, and work hard to keep the fleet #FitToFight. #STEMsaturday | #NavalSTEM | DoD STEM U.S. Navy photos: Karina Wise-Estrada 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eM4dNNB6
