Did you know … around $1.60 per taxpayer per year goes to support the Corporation for Public Broadcasting—just 0.01% of the federal budget. The return on that investment? Free programming; community events; and resources for teachers, parents and schools. As threats to public media funding grow, the future of local stations like ours is at risk. Visit protectmypublicmedia.org to learn how you can help defend this essential service for future generations.

Shout out to Rosemary Miller, Ed.D., who presented at SXSW EDU last week alongside our colleagues from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Austin PBS and PBS North Carolina. Their presentation focused on how the impactful work of the Ready To Learn initiative has improved educational outcomes among children. PBS SoCal shared a recap of and learnings from our work across California in collaboration with California State Library's Lunch at the Library program. Session attendees included education stakeholders from a variety of fields including schools, community-based organizations, policy, EdTech, and media.

As the lead station for “We the Neighbors: How the Good Gets Done,” we’re excited to share local stories about people in our SoCal communities who are helping strengthen the civic fiber of our region. We also wanted to shout out to our colleagues at KOSU, Idaho Public Television, WNPT - Nashville PBS, Nashville NPR, Alaska Public Media, and WHYY, who are all hard at work creating content that reflects the unique stories of the volunteers, mentors, and everyday leaders making their communities and regions stronger.
PBS SoCal is the lead station for public media’s new digital content and engagement initiative, “We the Neighbors: How the Good Gets Done.” Leading into 2026 and the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, the short-form, digital first initiative will tell the stories of volunteers, mentors, and everyday leaders who are strengthening their communities. #APTStheSummit https://lnkd.in/e545edkw

The Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 aimed to give “a stronger voice to educational radio and television.” As a result, Public Media (non-commercial television and radio) stations around the country began to fulfill a collective mission to "educate, inform, and inspire." For 60+ years, PBS SoCal has been an indispensable part of our Southern California communities, providing free, high-quality content and services, because we exist to serve the public good. Federal funding and you make public media possible. Together, we can protect this vital resource. Your voice can make a difference—stand with PBS SoCal to remind lawmakers that public media is essential. PBS SoCal staff stepped in front of the camera recently to create some end-of-the-year spots! Keep your eyes peeled for Alexander Wilson, Kathryn Weibezahl, and our colleagues from all of PBS SoCal's teams!
Tis the season to brush off my theater kid skills. We live during a time with so much need and so many causes to support. But, if you can, consider donating to PBS SoCal or your own local public media organization (or, better yet, become a member!). Station do so much: share stories of community, help our littlest ones learn, and report vital local news in an era of fewer and fewer outlets. Check out your local PM station! 🎁 https://lnkd.in/d5jqQTkN

Congratulations to our colleague Khrystal on a fantastic presentation at the National Center for Families Learning Conference! Khrystal shared learnings from the PBS SoCal Early Learning team's Family Math work!
It was an absolute privilege to present at the National Center for Families Learning Conference alongside my amazing co-presenters, Holly Ackerman and Emily Cornett from KET - Kentucky Educational Television. Our session focused on building parent and caregiver confidence through the PBS SoCal Family Math Initiative and exploring strategies to help parents and caregivers foster math positivity, confidence, and knowledge to support early learners. A big thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the discussion—your passion for empowering families was truly inspiring! 💚

In case you missed it ... LA Times reporter Keri Blakinger joined our digital series "Won't You Be My Gamer?" to explore and examine what we can learn from prison video games. The first two episodes featuring Keri are available on PBS SoCal's YouTube. The next two will drop this Friday and next at 5pm!
A ~slightly more fun than usual~ post: A few months ago, PBS SoCal asked me to be a prison "expert" for their new show, "Won't You Be My Gamer?" Basically, gamers are playing increasingly absurd prison-themed video games and I am fact-checking the games/providing snarky commentary. First of four episodes here: https://lnkd.in/gQ3AmY6H

Shout out to our colleague, Digital Producer Carla Pineda, who shared her skills with some young journalists this past week!
What a fun way to spend a Saturday morning chatting with savvy storytellers about digital tools and distribution. Thank you Los Angeles Times High School Insider, CSUN Journalism Department and SoCal JEA for inviting PBS SoCal to present workshops at J-Day, the annual youth journalism conference for Southern California high school students. Hire them all, they're fantastic! ❤️ 🎓
