Meet Our People: The Future Leaders of Outward Bound South Africa   At Outward Bound South Africa, our trainee instructors come from backgrounds much like most of our participants. They have faced fears, pushed past limitations, and emerged as strong, inspiring leaders—proof that growth happens when you step beyond your comfort zone.   Sonto’s Breakthrough: Sonto arrived as a non-swimmer and left with the confidence to cross the Swartvlei. Sphiwe’s Voice: Sphiwe once feared speaking in front of groups—now, she leads them. Thokozile’s Growth: Thokozile thought she knew outdoor education until OBSA pushed her beyond her limits. Wandile’s Strength: Wandile believed he had conquered his fears, but OBSA revealed new challenges that tested his endurance. Thami’s Journey: Thami found more than just a job—she found a path of transformation, proving she had what it takes to succeed.   From overcoming personal struggles to leading others, these five trainees are shaping the future of outdoor leadership. Celebrating Leadership Across the Global Outward Bound Community At the recent OUTWARD BOUND INTERNATIONAL Board meetings, hosted by Outward Bound New Zealand, we had the honour of recognizing three exceptional individuals with the Kurt Hahn Award—the highest distinction awarded within our global network. Iain Peter was recognized for 12 years of dedicated leadership as the Executive Director of Outward Bound International. During his tenure, OBI evolved into a respected, financially stable, and purpose-driven organization that serves as a vital asset to Outward Bound Schools around the world. Andrew Smith was celebrated for his longstanding service to both Outward Bound New Zealand and Outward Bound International, having served as Chair of both organizations. Andrew continues to champion the mission of Outward Bound globally with unwavering dedication. John Atkin was honoured for his nine years of service as Vice-Chair of the OBI Board and significant contributions to Outward Bound Australia. His commitment to strengthening the global network has had a profound impact. Andrew and John continue to serve as Outward Bound Global Ambassadors, continuing their vital role in advancing and advocating for the organization's mission worldwide.
