This #EarthMonth, OUTRIGGER Hospitality Group is proud to share the exceptional achievements of The OUTRIGGER Way ESG Award-winning resort, Castaway Island, Fiji! This award recognizes outstanding achievements in one or more of OUTRIGGER’s foundational ESG initiatives, and Castaway Island, Fiji achieved remarkable sustainability milestones in 2024. The resort is recognized among the exclusive Global Hotel Alliance #GreenCollection of hotels and resorts taking social and environmental matters seriously through a range of tangible initiatives aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Daily efforts ensure that all solid waste, including cardboard, glass, plastic, and food waste, is either recycled or properly disposed of and introduced a clean, renewable energy source that generated liquid fertilizer as a by-product. Guests are educated about and encouraged to participate in zero-emission marine and land-based activities, made available at Castaway. The resort also operates a desalination plant to provide fresh water and a bio sewage treatment plant, which processes waste in an environmentally responsible manner. In collaboration with stakeholders, including Mamanuca Environment Society Fiji, local land owners and Dr. Peter Harlow (Honorary Terrestrial Biologist, Taronga Conservation Society Australia), the resort team is actively restoring the island’s dry-forest ecosystem, which is home to native birds and reptiles. A key initiative includes reintroducing the native Fiji Crested Iguana to its natural habitat with support from Dr. Peter Harlow, Mamanuca Environment Society, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Fiji National University, local land owners, Auckland Zoo and Zoos Victoria. Through these initiatives, Castaway Island, Fiji continues to set new standards for sustainability and environmental stewardship. Our inaugural OUTRIGGERCares Award recipient represents the best of The OUTRIGGER Way of caring. With a deep commitment to supporting an often-overlooked community Ben Johnson CHDM, Area Director of Sales and Marketing for Fiji, was one of only 40 people in Australia accepted into a prestigious diploma program to be certified in Auslan (Australian Sign Language). He dedicated his personal time to mastering this specialized skill, recently graduating with NAATI national accreditation! Ben actively volunteers with various organizations across New South Wales, ensuring that this community’s voices are heard and their needs understood. In collaboration with Tourism Fiji and Fiji Airways, local influencers, and OUTRIGGER's two Fiji resorts, Ben is also working on the potential for a tourism campaign designed for the Deaf Community, incorporating Auslan to enhance accessibility and inclusion. OUTRIGGER Hospitality Group is pleased to announce the promotion by Hawaii Vacation Condos by OUTRIGGER of Sheila Gerbig-Hussey to Area General Manager, overseeing Royal Kahana Maui by OUTRIGGER and The Kapalua Villas Maui. Gerbig-Hussey, who has been with OUTRIGGER for more than 30 years, has served as General Manager at Royal Kahana since 2016.
