"It’s never been more challenging to be a Solo GP, yet, I can't imagine a better time to build one." There’s a lot of talk about the first single-employee billion-dollar company. I believe we’ll soon see the equivalent in venture, lean, focused funds built by small but mighty GP teams. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐆𝐏𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫-𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐬. Here are three stats that put this moment into perspective: 1️⃣ 𝟖𝟓% 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐨-𝐆𝐏𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 Source: Speedinvest & European Investment Fund (EIF) Emerging Managers Report, 2023 Solo-GPs aren’t just financiers, they’re founders, builders, and angels turning into capital allocators. This makes them highly aligned with the founders they back. 2️⃣𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐨𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐨-𝐆𝐏 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝 The number of first-time VC funds in Europe dropped to just 34 in 2024, down from 42 in 2023 and 66 in 2022, a 50% decline over two years. Sifted, 2024 Yet, the ones who persist often build differentiated, founder-friendly platforms. 3️⃣ 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐞𝐭, 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 Despite headwinds, we're seeing incredible Solo-GP success stories emerge. Think Rupa Ganatra Popat, Sarah Drinkwater, Robin Haak, and many others still coming! Proving that this path, while hard, is very much possible. What a time to be innovating in venture. AI Will Influence Our Human Experience Much More Than We Expect ⚡ Here are my bold predictions for AI. 1️⃣ It'll teach us how to efficiently learn 📚🧠 → Meta learning to the nth degree 2️⃣ It'll help us be "more human" ❤️🤝 → The most comprehensive and nuanced human emotions data set will be embedded in AI models. 3️⃣ Apps will become API infrastructure 🔗📲 → Traditional apps will fade into the background, powering APIs, new intuitive UIs will dominate (hint: voice) 4️⃣ AI will extend our lifespan 🏥🧬 → Predictive and preventative healthcare = longer, healthier lives. 5️⃣ AI will drive green energy 🌱⚡ → It'll consume lots of energy at first, then economic incentives will kick in to drive innovation that reward sustainability. 6️⃣ The idea of ‘personhood’ will evolve 🤯🦾 → Some form of AI-driven entities may become legally recognised. 7️⃣ AI will elevate our expectations 🔥🚀 → We’ll be more productive yes - but then we'll demand more, pushing AI to evolve even faster.
