A Safer Ohio: One Youth, One Family, One Community at a Time
About us
The Ohio Department of Youth Services (DYS) is the juvenile corrections system for the state of Ohio. DYS is statutorily mandated to confine felony offenders, ages 10 to 21, who have been adjudicated and committed by one of Ohio’s 88 county juvenile courts. During their stay with DYS, youth are engaged in programming that is designed to address their criminological and behavioral needs. Each of the three DYS facilities also operates a year-round school that offers general curriculum as well as vocation opportunities. DYS touches the lives of thousands of youth in Ohio. Beyond youth in DYS facilities and those on parole, DYS funds and supports over 664 direct service programs throughout the state offering more than 88,000 youth (based on annual program admissions) opportunities and services to encourage positive change. These range from prevention and diversion programs to residential treatment and community treatment in areas such as mental health, sex offending and substance abuse. The mission of the Ohio Department of Youth Services is to improve Ohio's future by habilitating youth and empowering families and communities. The vision of DYS is a safer Ohio: one youth, one family and one community at a time.

Countless studies show that education leads to better outcomes. That’s especially true for people who have been incarcerated. #SecondChanceMonth or #ReentryMonth allows us to highlight the strides so many of our young men are making in their efforts to build a positive future as they prepare for the outside world. Despite educational barriers throughout their lives, 16 young men recently graduated from Indian River High School 👨🎓, double the previous class. And they have a wide range of career goals from the trades to technology. #oneyouth #onefamily #onecommunity #SecondChances #juvenilejustice #highschoolgraduate #educationmatters #educationforall #thrivein25

For over a decade, DYS has supported the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiatives (JDAI). For years, participating county courts across Ohio have worked to reduce the negative use of detention through various efforts, expansions, and new developments. One of the more recent initiatives from our friends at the Ashtabula County Juvenile Court is Altered Community Service. Different from traditional community service, youth can complete tasks from home that are outside of traditional chores, like trade work. The initiative helps create a more inclusive environment for young people who are ordered to complete community service while giving them an opportunity to learn life skills and spend time with their families, which studies have shown improve the mental health of youth in juvenile justice. Since the implementation of Altered Community Service, there has been a 92% success rate on community service completions with much of the Ashtabula community benefiting the service of the youth. We will continue to collaborate with our courts to break down barriers to create a more effective juvenile justice system for youth to more positively impact our communities. #ThriveIn25 #JuvenileJustice #Habilitation #TransformAndSaveLives #SecondChances
