52 years ago today, this Black woman made history and paved the way for generations of leaders to come. 🗳️ In 1973, Lelia Foley was elected mayor of Taft, Oklahoma, becoming the first Black woman elected mayor in the United States. A divorced mother of five living on welfare, Lelia Foley didn’t wait for change, she decided to become the change. After being inspired by a visit to her community from civil rights leader Shirley Chisholm, Foley raised just $200, ran for office, and won.
