DERTA Supports Mets’ Opening Day Members from the Bureau of Police and Security’s Division of Emergency Response and Technical Assessment (DERTA) were on hand to safeguard Citi Field for the Mets’ opening day baseball game. DERTA provided support for the NYPD and Citi Field security team, offering expert assistance in hazardous materials safety and helping to keep 43,945 fans attending the sold-out game safe. The team deployed a full suite of resources, including specialized personnel and equipment to monitor for potential chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear hazards. A mobile lab was also on site to provide real-time monitoring. Thankfully, there were no incidents to report — just a great day at the ballpark, with fans enjoying a 5–0 Mets win over the Blue Jays! #NYCWater #Mets2025 #BaseballSeason #HAZMAT #DEPPolice

Bureau of Water Supply water ecology scientists Lori Froehlich, @Greg Brooks, and Katherine Flores are pictured alongside the Cannonsville Reservoir’s robotic monitoring buoy. Serving a vital role, this cutting-edge scientific instrument transmits real time water quality info, turbidity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, specific conductivity, and chlorophyll. Springtime signals a race against the clock, as teams work to deploy these high-tech machines promptly after the ice melts. Robotic monitoring buoys collect millions of measurements throughout the extensive reservoir network, allowing greater flexibility for management of the water quality — and ensuring the highest quality drinking water for City residents.

Mindful Tree Trimming The Bureau of Water Supply Tree Task Force recently removed trees in Ashokan to make space for the future Ashokan Wastewater Treatment Plant. To protect declining bat populations, tree removal is guided by seasonal timing. Bats hibernate in winter in caves or mines due to low insect availability and emerge in spring to roost in trees with shaggy, flaky, or peeling bark. Cutting trees between November 1 and March 31 helps avoid disturbing active bats or bat pups, which are especially vulnerable after birth and unable to fly for about six weeks. This tree-trimming timing aligns with endangered species guidelines to minimize impact and harm. #NYCWater #DEPForestryProgram #Forestry #TreeTrimming

Out of the Archives: 100 miles from NYC, Pepacton Reservoir holds more water than any other reservoir in the City system. When it reaches capacity, the flow over its spillway rejoins the East Branch of the Delaware River. Photos taken April 10, 1951, and April 11, 2017! Cleaning Up Rain Gardens Staff from the Bureau of Environmental Planning and Analysis (BEPA) and Queens Botanical Garden recently partnered for a cleanup event through the DEP Rain Garden Stewardship program. Approximately 13 dedicated volunteers cleaned 14 rain gardens along the garden’s perimeter, collecting 16 bags of trash and six bags of compost. The primary goal of the cleanup was to raise awareness about the benefits of rain gardens and promote the DEP Rain Garden Stewardship program within the Queens community. This initiative emphasizes the importance of maintaining rain gardens and encourages locals to engage in the city’s environmental stewardship efforts. Special thanks to Carolyn Egan and Gloria Garcia from BEPA for organizing the collaborative event. View the cleanup here: https://on.nyc.gov/4loSsog #NYCWater #RainGardens #NeighborhoodCleanup
