Baker's Candies story isn't your typical candy shop tale—it's a journey from missiles to chocolate! In part one of our conversation on the Building Nebraska podcast, Todd Baker, the CEO, detailed how the Nebraska family turned aerospace know-how into sweet success. Insights ahead 👇 1️⃣ The Baker family didn't start with a chocolate recipe—they started with cutting-edge manufacturing tech. Todd: "We had no recipe for chocolate...we had a manufacturing process that was more efficient than anything before it, and we had the unique advantage of being able to tailor-make all our recipes to work on that equipment." 📌 Why It Matters: This unconventional approach let them create better, cheaper gourmet chocolate, setting them apart in the industry. 2️⃣ Embracing their Nebraska roots, the Bakers built without debt, allowing them to expand on their terms and maintain control over their growth. "Nebraska is probably one of the last places on Earth that anyone would choose to start a chocolate factory...but land here was cheap, and the proximity to the interstate made it a good spot for a manufacturing wholesaler." 3️⃣ Baker’s Candies was built from the ground up—literally! "We built the very first production lines in the family basement...and we did it all ourselves, from constructing the building to designing the manufacturing line, all without taking on any debt." 📌 Why It Matters: Bootstrapping their business allowed them to grow sustainably without outside pressure, ensuring long-term stability. 4️⃣ Success for the Bakers isn’t about conquering the world—it’s about family. Todd: "We’re not motivated by what most businesses are...we want to build a family business that serves the family. If the day ever comes when the family starts to serve the business, my mom is on record saying she’ll burn the place to the ground—and I’m confident she’ll make good on that promise." You can hear all of these insights by listening to part ONE of the Building Nebraska Podcast, powered by Engler. 📺 https://lnkd.in/geSvGmyS
