New research from Dayne Swearer and first author Emma-Rose Newmeyer explores a light-activated catalytic process to produce propylene—one of the world’s most widely used commodity chemicals—with greater energy efficiency. This innovative approach could significantly reduce industrial emissions and support the global push for decarbonization. We're very excited to share our latest publication on electrosynthesis for the coupling of chemical feedstocks: olefins and CO2 in Angewandte Chemie. Grad student Stella Fors utilized alternating polarity (AP) electrolysis to enable a selective hydrocarboxylation reaction that undergoes a mechanism unique to other electrochemical olefin functionalization reactions. Detailed mechanistic studies demonstrate the role of AP on selectivity, mechanism, and the dual role of triethanolamine as reductant and HAT source. Seryeong Lee is a PhD candidate in the Department of Chemistry in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. She is researching how the atomic environment of metals in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) influences their catalytic properties. Seryeong is also a member of many campus organizations, serving as a board member of the Graduate Student Association (GSA) and Phi Lambda Upsilon (PLU), and is the CARES liaison for NuBonD.
