Congratulations, Shannon L. McCool, MS CCC-SLP, ITFS, Mentor Coach! Shannon served 27 years as a hospital based (acute care) Speech-Language Pathologist, the Covid Pandemic wore her soul completely out. Like many others, she witnessed quite a lot of sadness during the pandemic. Ultimately, Shannon found she needed to make a career change to improve her own mental wellbeing. Her long-time friend of 30+ years, Ms. Kay Clark-James, had been encouraging her to consider early intervention with the Children's Developmental Services Agency (CDSA). Ms. Kay Clark-James had been working on recruiting Shannon for a number of years. As she always emphasized, the State Of North Carolina offers substantially more benefits. In addition, the work load is no where near as demanding as 12-hour days on your feet in a hospital surrounded by the loss of life related to the pandemic. So in January 2021, Shannon joined the CDSA which is under the Department of Health and Human Services/Division of Child & Family Wellbeing. Her role with the CDSA is to provide evaluations to children and families to determine eligibility for the North Carolina Infant Toddler Program. In addition, she assist the CDSA Service Coordinators as a provider (of last resort) for speech-language services (including dysphagia or swallowing difficulties) for the numerous children/families that are served in the five counties that they cover. In summary, Shannon finds herself humbly grateful to her dear friend, Ms. Kay Clark-James for this delightful career transition. She now has time to develop new knowledge, more skills, and, most importantly, wonderful relationships with the infant/toddlers, families (caregivers), as well as with the wonderful colleagues that she works with. "My personal and professional moto is that knowledge and the opportunity to learn should never end. My hope is to learn something new each day. I also hope to make changes in my own life each day that make me not only a better person but also a better professional. My education started in the 80s and my work history started in the 90s. As I move closer toward the end of my working career, pursuing Endorsement provided me with both new learning opportunities for my professional life as well as with opportunities to make personal changes with my actions and my thinking." - Shannon Thank you for all of your hard work Shannon!

Webinar coming up on April 10th at 2pm! Maternal and Child Health and Mental Well-Being: Cornerstones of a Thriving Community. The health and mental health of mothers, birthing parents, and fathers form the foundation of a child’s well-being, a family’s stability, and a thriving community. Yet, for too many—especially in historically marginalized communities—maternal health outcomes are overshadowed by preventable complications, high mortality and morbidity rates, and systemic failures that leave families without the care and support they deserve.
