Exciting News for the Future of the North Alabama Zoo! We recently received the results of a new feasibility and market analysis study from Canopy Strategic Partners, one of the premier advising firms in the U.S. zoo industry. Their findings confirm what we’ve long believed—Greater Huntsville is primed for a zoo, and it’s curious why one hasn’t been established yet. Here are the key takeaways: ✅ If the North Alabama Zoo were to do just an average job, it would be self-sustaining. ✅ It would directly support 92 jobs and, according to a previous economic impact study from UAH, stimulate 650+ additional jobs in the community. ✅ A feasibility study was first conducted six years ago, but given today’s economic climate, we commissioned a new one to make sure this would still be beneficial to our community. It turns out our initial study underestimated the potential success of a zoo in this area. We’ve been approaching public leaders to present a better funding model for the zoo’s construction. As we have, some members of the public have questioned if private investment wouldn't be better instead. Here’s why that won’t work: 1️⃣ Greater Huntsville isn’t affluent enough to fund the construction of a private zoo at the scale needed to be successful. 2️⃣ Private zoos prioritize investor profits over public accessibility. This means high ticket prices and often leads to poor long-term animal care. Eventually resulting in low attendance and subsequent financial crisis. 3️⃣ Successful zoos across the U.S. follow a proven, sustainable model—a public-nonprofit partnership between local government and a nonprofit. This is the approach that works, and it’s the model we are following. This model then brings more money into the community - $117M estimated over 6 years for North Alabama Zoo. The North Alabama Zoo is an investment in our community, education, and economic growth. We’re committed to making it a reality the right way—with a funding model that ensures long-term success and accessibility for all. Let’s bring a world-class zoo to North Alabama! 🦁🐘🦓 #NorthAlabamaZoo #EconomicGrowth #FeasibilityStudy #ZooForYou #CommunityInvestment

Proud of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's commitment to conservation!
Founder and CEO of Mongabay, a nonprofit organization that delivers news and inspiration from Nature's frontline via a global network of reporters.
What are the largest conservation groups in the United States? Below is a look at the biggest U.S.-based NGOs focused on nature conservation. But first, a few caveats: 🌳 This list includes only US non-profit entities, so it doesn’t necessarily represent the full scope of an organization’s work. For example, WWF and Greenpeace have several entities registered outside the U.S., which are not included in this analysis. This data is based entirely on 990 filings. 🐘 Some organizations have multiple entities within the US. For example, Audubon has at least 6 entities that had budgets exceeding $5 million in 2023. The Sierra Club has separate 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities. 💰 The ranking is based on annual expenses for the most recent fiscal year. Revenue can be “lumpy” due to the nature of nonprofit accounting. For example, the full value of a multi-year grant is typically booked in the first year, even though the money for subsequent years may not have arrived yet and may be conditional. 🐬 While some zoos have significant conservation projects, the only ones included on this list are the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), which runs the Bronx Zoo among other institutions, and the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. 🦎 The inclusion or exclusion of specific groups, insofar as whether they can be deemed conservation groups, is certainly open to debate. Without further ado, here’s the list. All figures in millions of US dollars. ✅ US groups with large conservation programs The Nature Conservancy (TNC) - 1120 (2023) San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance - 391 (2023) National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) - 373 (2022) Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) - 374 (2023) World Wildlife Fund (WWF) - 353 (2023) Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) - 326 (2023) The Conservation Fund - 305 (2022) Ducks Unlimited - 291 (2023) Conservation International (CI) - 247 (2023) National Audubon Society - 159 (2023) Sierra Club Foundation - 113 (2022) National Wildlife Federation (NWF) - 109 (2022) National Park Foundation - 101 (2022) Resources Legacy Fund - 90 (2022) Arbor Day Foundation - 86 (2023) ✅ Groups whose conservation work includes a substantial international component Nature Conservancy (TNC) - 1120 (2023) San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance - 391 (2023) Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) - 374 (2023) World Wildlife Fund (WWF) - 353 (2023) Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) - 326 (2023) Conservation International (CI) - 247 (2023) National Audubon Society - 159 (2023) Rainforest Alliance - 69.9 (2022) Wildlife Conservation Network (WCN) - 43.8 (2023) BirdLife International - 38.7 (2022) African Wildlife Foundation - 36.7 (2023) Nia Tero - 33.8 (2022) Rainforest Trust - 31.7 (2022) Rare - 31 (2022) African Parks Network - 29.3 (2022) American Bird Conservancy - 25.6 (2022) Other breakdowns coming soon: environmental groups (broader tha nature conservation), activist/advocacy NGOs, zoos & aquariums, environmental policy think tanks, etc.

Check out this cool new drone footage from Caltrans of the construction progress for the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing! The deck is coming along and we'll likely have soil on the crossing by the end of the year. This truly is the "world's most hopeful construction project."

Thank you so much to Intrepid for supporting our summer camp program! As we work toward a physical zoo with real live animals, these little furry critters are filling in. We think they're pretty cute substitutes 🦊 🐢 🦒
