From Baker to Founder This is the beginning of a new hardware startup story. Gibbuem Bae, CEO of Toasterz, started as a baker. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she baked sourdough and faced many challenges in mastering the process. The biggest issue? Levain is highly sensitive and requires precise fermentation conditions. Fermentation at home was difficult because it typically demands large, industrial-grade equipment—naturally, not something designed for home use. So, she decided to create a prototype that simplifies sourdough levain fermentation for home bakers. That’s when she made up her mind: "This is my mission—solving problems in sourdough baking." Feel Unhealthy? After lunch, many office workers experience fatigue, a condition that may be linked to blood sugar spikes. Consistently consuming refined carbohydrates not only accelerates aging but can also lead to "brain fog" and increase the risk of diseases like diabetes. However, carbohydrates are also our primary source of energy and the body’s most efficient fuel. So, should we memorize every food's glycemic index (GI)? Or should we establish a rule to label GI alongside calories? Thai startup Tasted Better has developed flour with a GI close to 1.6. According to founder Perrada Suponpun, that’s a figure almost as low as water. Tasted Better is expanding beyond Thailand into markets like the EU and South Korea, making it likely that this product will soon be widely available. However, the atmosphere at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024 felt distinctly different from such sugar-coated narratives. In the Business Development Representative (BDR) field, a new AI called AVA(Artisan) combines various SaaS functions to handle business development. Meanwhile, niche services are emerging in Japan, Central Asia, the United States, and beyond, focusing on connecting essential roles, such as engineers or co-founders. The era where AI can directly be "hired" has arrived, and in this disruptive environment, outcomes can be either positive or negative. Adapting to this era is essential.
