  • Water is the foundation of life, yet much of the country’s water and wastewater systems often go unnoticed. These systems are aging and need continuous investment to avoid crisis situations like we’ve seen in communities where investment needs are ignored. #WaterWeek2025 is a time to focus on developing solutions that will ensure access to this resource for generations to come.

  • Congratulations to Jesse Donelson, Angela Hicks, and Tommy Posey of Texas Water Utilities for their outstanding first place win at the Texas American Water Works Association’s Top Ops Competition!

Senior Vice President, Water & Wastewater Operations

I'm proud of the Texas Water Utilities' "Top Ops" team for winning the championship at Texas Water 2025 in Houston, TX. Angela Hicks, Jesse Donelson, and Thomas Posey will now travel to Denver, CO in June to represent the Texas Section AWWA, competing against operator teams from around the country. https://lnkd.in/guu3Bzzx AWWA’s Top Ops Competition recognizes and promotes excellence and professionalism in all aspects of water operations by establishing a competition that gives operators the opportunity to showcase their talents. The AWWA Top Ops Competition is a competitive, question-and-answer tournament where a moderator asks a broad range of technical questions to the participating teams and they have limited time to answer. Strategy is involved since points are awarded for correct answers, deducted for incorrect answers, and no change occurs to the score for not answering a question.

  • Throughout #WomensHistoryMonth, we're showcasing the talented women of Nexus! Today we're featuring Rachel Reusch, Project Manager with Sunshine Water Services. What is the best advice you've received? "My first mentor at my first job in the water industry gave me a great piece of advice. Don't be afraid to ask questions. My mentor expressed that it might feel uncomfortable asking something you think others already know, but they assured me that everyone has been there. Asking questions, even the ones that feel basic, is how you learn and grow. It shows you're engaged and eager to understand, and people respect that. So, don’t hold back—if something doesn’t make sense, ask about it. You’re building the foundation for your future knowledge. In fact, asking the "silly" questions can often lead to the biggest breakthroughs." What advice would you give to your younger self? "Be confident, even when you feel out of your depth. There will be times when you'll be in a room filled with people who seem more experienced or know more than you. It can feel intimidating, but trust me—everyone started somewhere, and they were once in your shoes. Don’t doubt yourself. Your perspective is valuable, and you have insights worth sharing. Speak up. You might surprise yourself with how much your voice matters, and the people around you will start to recognize your unique contribution. Confidence doesn’t come from knowing everything; it comes from being comfortable with who you are and the knowledge you bring to the table."

  • We're proud to share another employee spotlight for #WomensHistoryMonth! Today we're featuring Angela Hicks, Area Manager with Texas Water Utilities. How did you first become interested in the water industry, and what was your journey like to get here? "My passion for public drinking water began with my career at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). I had the opportunity to work with a talented group of engineers on the TCEQ Texas Optimization Program (TOP). They encouraged and mentored my career development which led to me achieving certifications in both Special Performance Evaluations (SPE’s) and EPA triggered surface water facility mandatory Comprehensive Performance Evaluation (mCPE’s). I continued to serve with the Area Wide Optimization Program covering EPA Region 6.  I am truly grateful to have had mentors that loved the water industry and poured their experience and knowledge into me as a young investigator. As a TWU Area Manager, I am able to use my previous experience and regulatory background to be a part of the solutions and make a positive impact for the company and our customers."   What advice would you give to your younger self? "My advice is that it’s better to have tried and failed, then have never tried at all. The fear of failure can paralyze us, preventing us from taking risks and pursuing our passions. By actively trying, even if it leads to failure, we gain valuable experience and open ourselves up to new possibilities. Once you discover that your failures don’t define you….possibilities are endless."
