Meta Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun reflects on his decades-long journey in artificial intelligence, from being inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey as a kid to leading breakthroughs in neural networks and machine learning. To be truly intelligent, LeCun argues that AI will require common sense, self-organization and physical-world understanding—far beyond the capabilities of today's language models. I remember a conversation I had a few years ago with a startup founder who was in the thick of it—building, scaling, trying to keep a hundred plates spinning at once. She worked crazy hours, making tough calls every day, and convinced herself that success meant out-hustling everyone else. At the time, it made sense. That kind of grind-it-out mentality felt like the price of growth. But over time, something started to shift. She began to realize (like many others) that the real fuel for growth isn’t just hustle—it’s people. It’s the kind of culture you build. It’s finding balance, even when everything feels urgent. That’s why I’m genuinely excited about our 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 list. It celebrates the companies that are doing things differently—putting people first, creating strong cultures, and proving that you don’t have to burn out to build out. These startups are showing that when you invest in your team, amazing things happen. #AmericasGreatestStartupWorkplaces2025 #StartupSuccess #Leadership #CompanyCulture Newsweek, Plant-A Insights Group

Yann LeCun, who laid the groundwork for today's AI boom, shared his thoughts on the future of large language models as part of Newsweek's AI Impact Interview series. He tells Gabriel Snyder and Marcus Weldon he's skeptical of its future: "We're never going to get to human-level intelligence by just training on text. It's never going to happen." Meta's Chief AI Scientist explains that reasoning and planning in AI technology first requires mental models of physical environments. "I think I'd be happy if by the time I retire we have systems that are as smart as a cat,” LeCun said. Newsweek's AI Impact Interview series invites leaders in the field to share their experiences to this point and how they see the technology evolving in the future. In this issue of Newsweek magazine we explore the feasibility of Donald Trump's ambition to send a manned U.S. mission to Mars by the end of his term of office. With the story, we also launch our new YouTube series, Expanding Space. Hosted by our cover story writer, self-confessed space nerd Joshua Rhett Miller, the biweekly series will explore further tales about the universe and beyond. In the first episode, Joshua and Derrick Pitts, Chief Astronomer at The Franklin Institute, break down what would be required to make that perilous journey to the red planet. The story is a fascinating read and the video series the perfect accompaniment to it. You can find both via the link below. Shout out to our director of video Vivek Kemp for leading this YouTube series, Sheri Jennings for her help with the bookings and our magazine art director Carrie Bremner for the fantastic layout and design. It is great to work with such a talented team. https://lnkd.in/eDcFzMFi
