#DOGE now plans to try to assign teams to #nonprofits that receive federal funds. Vera had the courage to say "no" to this illegal demand. If your nonprofit receives a similar demand, please contact New York Lawyers for the Public Interest through our confidential intake form (link below in the comments).
“This administration has systematically attacked every aspect of civil society, from academia to law firms and the media, and is now coming after the nonprofit sector. We can only surmise that these tactics seek to silence us.” - Vera President Nick Turner 🚨 On April 11, Vera received an email from DOGE staff, requesting a meeting to discuss “having a DOGE team assigned to the organization.” This outreach came just one week after the DOJ notified us it was terminating $5M in federal funding for essential public safety programs. #DOGE staffers told us that any “institute or agency” that receives congressional monies would have a team assigned. It became clear that DOGE did not know that Vera’s #DOJ grants had already been terminated. The meeting ended with staffers withdrawing the request to install a team. There is no law or executive order giving DOGE any authority over independent nonprofits like Vera. And while we’re the first criminal justice organization to be targeted, we know we won’t be the last. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/egbQTpXg #CriminalJusticeReform #FederalFunding #Trump
