🏘️ Residents at Hylan Houses have voted again—and this time, they’ve broken the tie. After a runoff election, Hylan becomes the fourth New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) development to select the Public Housing #PreservationTrust, unlocking access to federal funding for long-overdue repairs. With an estimated $90M in capital needs, this milestone will help preserve 209 homes for 410 residents. "What the vote at Hylan Houses showed us is that the residents of this development are ready for something new,” said NYCHA Chief Executive Officer Lisa Bova-Hiatt. “Hylan residents showed up to cast their ballots, not just once but twice, to make it known that they’re ready to bring change to their lives and their homes. We are very much looking forward to working in close collaboration with Hylan residents as we start a brand-new chapter at their campus through the Public Housing Preservation Trust." "Residents at Hylan voted overwhelmingly for long-overdue investment,” said NYC Public Housing Preservation Trust President Vlada Kenniff. “In partnership with NYCHA, we're ready to get to work with the residents and deliver the building repairs and healthier communities they've been waiting for." We're proud of the engagement and leadership shown by the Hylan community and excited to begin the next phase of collaboration and improvement. About us
The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is the largest public housing authority in North America. NYCHA is committed to increasing opportunities for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers by providing safe, affordable housing and facilitating access to social and community services. More than 400,000 New Yorkers reside in NYCHA’s 326 public housing developments around the five boroughs, and another 235,000 receive subsidized rental assistance in private homes through the NYCHA-administered Section 8 Leased Housing Program. To fulfill its vital mission and even better serve residents while facing dramatic reductions in traditional government funding, NYCHA is developing new financing options and building innovative partnerships across the public, private, and non-profit sectors. These strategies are helping NYCHA to address many key challenges, from preserving aging housing stock through timely maintenance and modernization of developments, to increasing resident access to a multitude of community, educational and recreational programs, as well as job readiness and training initiatives.

Lisa Bova-Hiatt has spent nearly 30 years in public service, and as New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)’s CEO, she is committed to transforming and preserving public housing for generations to come. 🔹 Exciting Projects in 2025: Lisa is most excited about NYCHA’s rehabilitation projects, which bring billions in investment to enhance living conditions for #NYCHAResidents through #PACT, the Public Housing #PreservationTrust, and Comprehensive Modernization. 🔹 The Future of Real Estate at NYCHA: She envisions #NYCHA using innovative recapitalization strategies to sustain #AffordableHousing while creating more inclusive and connected communities across NYC. 🔹 Key Career Lesson: "I have seen firsthand the value of pairing the implementation of innovative policies and actions with robust community and resident engagement. New Yorkers rightfully want a say in what is happening in their communities. I believe that instituting mechanisms for public input yields better outcomes and solutions that are often more responsive to a community’s specific needs and assets." During #WomensHistoryMonth, we recognized Bryttne Wright & Dorcia McDuffie M.P.A., who formed a powerful mentor-mentee partnership in Cohort 2 of New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)’s Coaching & Mentoring Leadership Academy. Through CMLA, Bryttne has expanded her leadership skills and network, while Dorcia has gained insights into self-growth and #NYCHA’s culture. Their story highlights the value of mentorship in professional development! The CMLA has helped both women in different ways. For Ms. Wright, the program was an introduction to areas of leadership study she had not previously explored. “I have been a professional for quite some time already,” said Ms. Wright, “but this opportunity has helped me grow far beyond where I was when I began the program.” For Mrs. McDuffie, the CMLA opportunity has been revelatory – sometimes in surprising ways: “Right now, I’m reading a book called How to Deal with Toxic People. What it really taught me about was…my own bad behavior! I was amazed when I saw what I was doing. But once I saw it, as I told Bryttne, I immediately knew what needed to change. And that kind of self-correction is critical to leadership.” Interested in joining Cohort 3? Apply or nominate a colleague by April 14: https://on.nyc.gov/4cpBW3p #NYCHAEmployees

In honor of Social Work Month, we celebrate the dedication of New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)’s social workers, like Victor Essah, a Community Coordinator in the Family Partnerships Department. Originally from Sierra Leone, Victor’s journey—from experiencing civil war to supporting survivors of violence—shaped his commitment to social services. Now at #NYCHA, he helps residents access critical resources, ensuring they get the support they need. 💬 "Whatever little step I take, or whatever positive change I can make in somebody’s life, it always inspires me to want to do more." During #WomensHistoryMonth, we celebrated the women who are leading the way at New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)! Across the Authority, women have risen to leadership in traditionally male-dominated roles, including three of the Vice Presidents for Public Housing Operations — Neagia Drew in Queens/Staten Island, Angela Gadson in the Bronx, and Erenisse Tavarez in Manhattan. NYCHANow spoke with them about their mentors, how they empower others, and moving NYCHA forward together. Ms. Drew commented, "I came into this agency at a time when there weren’t a lot of women in leadership. Now that I’m coming to the height of my career, and to look out and see that there are other women across the table and we are making these decisions, it’s the best feeling in the world. It gives me the hope that I still have reach and still have places to go because of the women that are ahead of me."
