Thank you to NCIOM and NC Child for hosting the 2nd #StateOfTheChild2025 Summit yesterday. It was a great day filled with positive energy; sharing of realities, but approaches for possibilities; leaders from the local level and state level, including the Governor, Lt. Governor, and Secretary of HHS... and most importantly, young people and their perspectives... There is hope always. Let's focus on our "how" as ED for NC Child, Erica Palmer-Smith shared, and make NC "first in children."

Powerful panel with such talent, emotional intelligence, and leadership. Amazing testimony from Paige, our neighbor over in Ashe County who gave a firsthand witness to mental health in schools post-Helene. Incredible job by NC Child to share their platform with these young advocates.

I’m honored to serve on the NC Child board and attend today’s State of the Child Summit. Grateful for the work they do to highlight the needs of NC’s children and families. There’s not much certainty in life except death, taxes and demographics. We know that a child that is 2 years old today will be 32 years old in 30 years. When we do what’s right for children and families, we are building our state’s future workforce. If I grow old, the physician, nurse and other healthcare professionals who will take care of me may be children today. We all have a vested interest in ensuring children thrive. The Rural Center sponsored a session at today's State of the Child Summit on how policy changes and strategic investments can help North Carolina better recruit workers to the childcare industry. Improving childcare access is a priority in rural economic development for us and many of our partners and we're glad this conversation continues.
