For our last Women’s History Month spotlight, Michael Weatherspoon, Safety and Training Supervisor from Carpentersville, IL, shares a heartfelt reflection about his late mother, Emma Mae Stafford Weatherspoon, who he described as a mother, provider, and a pillar of strength.
Born in 1927 and passing in 2003, her wisdom and love continue to live on through her children and grandchildren. Emma was an only child who became the devoted mother of 11. After losing her husband at the age of 46, she never remarried but instead dedicated her life to raising her children, ensuring they grew up with strong values and an unwavering work ethic. She led by example, showing them the power of perseverance, kindness, and selflessness. Even in times of illness, she never let on — her strength was silent but undeniable. Calling her a strong woman is an understatement; Emma was resilience personified.
To my mom, I say: “Mom, we haven’t forgotten. We haven’t forgotten your lessons, your words, the love you gave so freely. We haven’t forgotten the way you looked at us with that knowing smile, even when we dozed off beside you. We haven’t forgotten the doctor’s visits, the struggles, the pain you endured with grace. Most of all, we will never forget you. We love you; we miss you, and we honor you today and always.”
Thank you for sharing your memory of your mother with us, Michael.
