Advancing the business and policy interests of America’s cooperatives and other farmer-owned enterprises.
About us
Since 1929, the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives (NCFC) has been the voice of America’s farmer cooperatives. Our members are regional and national farmer cooperatives, which in turn consist of nearly 2,000 local farmer cooperatives across the country. The majority of America’s 2 million farmers and ranchers belong to one or more farmer cooperatives. NCFC members also include 17 state and regional councils of cooperatives. Farmer cooperatives handle, process and market almost every type of agricultural commodity; furnish farm supplies; and provide credit and related financial services, including export financing. Earnings from these activities are returned to their farmer members on a patronage basis, helping improve their income from the marketplace. Farmer cooperatives also provide over 250,000 jobs, with a total payroll in excess of $8 billion, and contribute significantly to the economic well-being of rural America.

NCFC joined more than 60 organizations to send a letter to Congress, urging them to fully fund USDA Rural Development in FY 2026. USDA-RD is a lifeline for the development of rural America, sponsoring programs that expand access to broadband and housing, provide safe and clean water, promote business growth, and provide support for local leaders like farmer-owned co-ops. Cuts to these programs would be devastating. Congress must protect rural families, farmers, and communities trying to thrive in tough economic times. Keeping rural America strong happens through investments, not cuts. Read the full coalition letter and learn why this matters: https://lnkd.in/eaAT_xTn #RuralDevelopment #FarmerCoops #AgPolicy Our thanks to CoBank for the photo!

When farmers speak with one voice, it’s powerful. As a cooperative, Riceland is making sure that voice is heard in Washington, D.C., and beyond. In this video, President & CEO Kevin McGilton provides context on the challenges facing the ag economy, while EVP & COO Ben Noble and multi-generational farmer Jennifer James visit Capitol Hill to advocate for policies that support farmers, including a strong Farm Bill. For over 100 years, Riceland has been more than a business—it’s been a cooperative force for farmers, in the field and on the Hill.

Last week, National Council of Farmer Cooperatives welcomed over 50 farmers, growers, and co-op leaders to Washington, DC for a spring fly-in to discuss the importance of Section 199A to farmer co-ops. Over two days, our members took to Capitol Hill and met with nearly 100 members of Congress, including those from the House Committees on Ways and Means, and Agriculture, as well as the Senate Committees on Finance, and Agriculture, Nutrition, & Forestry and explained how Section 199A has worked to strengthen American businesses, create jobs, boost local economies. They also had the opportunity to share personal stories about how the provision has had a direct impact on their family farms. Ensuring tax fairness through a permanent extension of Section 199A is essential to maintaining stability and encouraging investment across rural America. We appreciate the many lawmaker who are committed to working together to support cooperatives and American agriculture. Thanks to our members for traveling to our nation's capital to ensure policymakers acknowledge the real impact their legislation has on farmers and ranchers. NCFC joined nearly 300 groups across the agriculture sector in a letter sent to USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin regarding the MAHA commission. The groups urge the Commission to utilize the existing expansive body of sound, quality science and data in their reviews of products essential to food and agriculture, while strengthening critical components of a healthy and dynamic food system and farm economy. The letter also expressed the group's openness to working with the agencies and Make America Healthy Again Commission on their shared goals of improving health outcomes for all Americans. It’s been a fast start to the year for Idealyst Innovation as we introduce our model to friends and colleagues across the industry! There has been so much energy, excitement and support for Idealyst’s work to more deeply understand the most pressing on-farm challenges in the current and future operating environment so we can better align ag innovation to the real needs of farmers and ranchers. As I have shared our view of the opportunities we have before us in this dynamic, high risk environment, I remain encouraged by leaders who aren’t afraid to explore the edges of their business model to find new ways to strengthen farmer resiliency and American Food Power. Thank you to American Farm Bureau Federation, Nationwide , National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, Central Valley Ag Cooperative, Tennessee Farmers Cooperative, Farm Credit Council and FCCS for hosting us and inspiring important conversations and collaboration. Your ongoing leadership is essential for our industry. There are many things we can control even in the face of uncertainty. Let’s continue to intentionalize our work together. Join us!
