Eleven years ago was the first time we explained how and why windage is used to address warpage problems. What was once a time-consuming and tedious procedure has morphed (pun intended) into something much more practical and efficient. Tim Lankisch, of CAE | The Moldflow Experts, gives us an update on how the accuracy of warpage simulations has improved over time, which has naturally enhanced the success rate of windage applications. https://bit.ly/43JQmZT #simulation #CAD #CAM #Molding #Engineering #MoldDesign #Software

What's new and what works in mold manufacturing.
About us
MoldMaking Technology addresses the complete lifecycle of the manufacture and maintenance of a mold—from design to first shot—by providing solutions and strategies to moldmaking professionals charged with designing, building and repairing molds. MMT utilizes an Editorial Advisory Board to help guide the direction of the brand. This board is made up of authorities with expertise within their respective business, industry, technology and profession. Their role is to advise on timely issues, trends and advances in the field, offer editorial thought and direction, review and comment on specific articles and generally act as a sounding board and a conscience for the publication. MMT remains committed to bringing our audience what’s new and what works in mold manufacturing by focusing on the needs of today’s mold builders. Anything from successful business practices to manufacturing strategies can be found in a technology article, application story, shop profile or tip of the month that applies to today’s mold shop owners, tool and mold manufacturers, injection molders and OEMs.

Understanding elasticity and thermal expansion can lead to better mold designs — and smarter solutions. Preloading side actions are a great example of innovative solutions that provide compensation for flex, compression, elasticity and thermal effects on movable cores. Mark Scanlan of PFA, Inc. breaks down how these material properties impact molding and how to design with them in mind. https://bit.ly/4i2jL5a #MoldBuilding #MoldComponents #MoldDesign

Have you had the chance to read the newest issue of MMT? This issue is full of great tips of the trade. Here are 5 you can expect to read about this month: 1. An introduction to elasticity and thermal expansion (PFA, Inc.) 2. Common causes of inadequate mold cooling. 3. Establishing new product development project scope requires clear goals, resource allocation, champions for technologies and flexibility for trial and error. (Dynamic Tool Corporation) 4. G.A.Röders Gmbh & Co KG uses an advanced cooling system employing gun drilling to deliver high-pressure water to quickly and evenly cool areas deep within a mold cavity. 5. Six factors to consider to broaden the application of aluminum molds. (American Quality Molds,Llc) Check out these features and more here: https://bit.ly/4jMFfov #MoldMaking #MoldBuilding #MoldMaintenance #Cooling #MoldMaterials #Tips #Basics

In addition to talking about the Work-Based Learning Consortium training programs, our conversation with Paul Coleman, Learning & Program Development Specialist, touched on creating inclusive manufacturing workplaces. Coleman's explains that inclusion isn't just about social responsibility—it's about tapping into underutilized talent pools and creating stronger, more adaptable workplaces. Check out what our friends at Additive Manufacturing Media saw in terms of #3Dprinting and #AdditiveManufacturing for #MoldTooling ⬇️
🔭 At this year's Plastics Technology Expo (PTXPO), I went hunting for the ways that additive manufacturing is influencing plastics processing. I found 3D printed EOAT, some end-use parts, but more than anything else: MOLD TOOLING. 👉 And no, not just for conformal cooling! Here are 5 OTHER trends happening in 3D printed mold tools: 1️⃣ Ceramic resin molds, offering a more durable option for prototype and short-run injection molding applications (video on this to come) 2️⃣ 3D printed porosity for mold venting — whether built into a complete cavity or incorporated through drop-in components 3️⃣ 3D printable tool steels that are NOT maraging; alloys with better thermal properties and corrosion resistance are now available for laser powder bed fusion (video on this linked below) 4️⃣ 3D printing as a lead time advantage for building molds, whether because of complexity, supply chain challenges or some other reason 5️⃣ Using 3D printing as both an alternative and support to conventional mold production — not as an all-or-nothing choice. Read more and learn about the parts pictured here in today's article on Additive Manufacturing Media, linked in the comments below. 👇 Thank you to Nota3D, Impac Systems Engineering, Axtra3D, Next Chapter Manufacturing, Xact Metal, Zero Tolerance, International Mold Steel, Mantle, Alba Enterprises LLC and others who spent time talking with me at the show in Rosemont! #AdditiveManufacturing #3DPrinting #InjectionMolding #MoldMaking #PTXPO2025
