Did we come back from the brink? The latest market tremors—from tariff-driven inflation fears to the spikes in treasury yields—raise this question. Against this backdrop, our Postdoc Vaibhav Keshav (with Drew Winters) has a timely new publication in the European Financial Management journal. They examine how the UK’s 2022 “Growth Plan”—a fiscal shock that blindsided markets—triggered investor runs on Pound-denominated fixed net asset value money market funds. The paper offers important insights into how even the safest instruments get hit when confidence breaks and liquidity is constrained. Market stability isn't just about fundamentals—expectations, incentives, and who moves first have a crucial role. 📘 Read paper: https://lnkd.in/ehrMcqee #MoneyMarketFunds #FinancialStability #Tariff #MacroRisk #CRE

For the final session of “Thesis Shark Tank”, we were joined by MSRED alumni Peter Cameron (MSRED 2007), Principal, Head of Asset Management at Marcus Partners, Professor Albert Saiz (and) Jason Korb (MSRED 2009), Principal at Capstone Communities LLC. Both Peter and Jason talked about what value that writing their own theses papers brought to their professional trajectories and encouraged our students to be ambitious with their research endeavors. Many thanks to both for discussing their experience and giving feedback on the student presentations. The students really appreciated the opportunity to engage with our alumni, who in turn, embraced the opportunity to share their insight and perspective. Many thanks to MSRED alumni Phillip D Cohen (MSRED 2018) of Boston Communities and Chris Whittier (MSRED 2019) of Tishman Speyer for participating in Professor Albert Saiz’s Thesis Prep course! They were this week’s “sharks” for “Thesis Shark Tank,” at which our MSRED students presented their thesis topics and got feedback from Phil and Chris. The students really benefitted from the knowledge our alumni brought to the event. We love it when former students come back to engage with the current cohort. Professor Albert Saiz gave a keynote at the #SustainableCities workshop with The World Bank. He presented his research on how the presence of natural barriers influences transportation environments and urban densities across the globe. The research introduces three novel indexes: the share of natural barriers, non-convexity (a measure of natural fragmentation), and the average road detour to measure and study the practical reach and effects of natural barriers around global cities. It calculates these indexes for areas in and around four separate global city-boundary definitions, augmenting the original data with relevant additional variables.
