Kim M. Buttram, CEcD, Director of Economic Development for the City of Mesquite, has been a driving force behind the city’s growth and success. With 18 years in the field, eight years with Mesquite Economic Development, and four as director, her passion for fostering opportunity and revitalizing communities has shaped her career. Her passion for economic development was shaped by raising her family in a rapidly growing town, where she developed a deep love for community growth, a passion for creating hope and opportunity, and a desire to bring new life to older, abandoned places. What she enjoys most about her work is seeing her team, partners, and residents thrive—whether through a new development, a transformative career opportunity, or a community event that brings people closer to their city. Her advice to young women aspiring to lead in economic development or any industry: Do what you care about and take on new challenges. Don’t let social status, gender, or age intimidate you. Prepare, educate yourself, and go all in. Learn from those different than you, embrace your value, and never underestimate the impact you can make. Today, in celebration of Women’s History Month, we’re recognizing Debbie Anderson and Lisa Theriot for their dedication and service on the Mesquite Economic Development Advisory (MEDA) Board. Debbie Anderson has dedicated over 20 years to community service, including her time as a councilwoman for the Mesquite City Council (2021-2023). Following her term, she joined the MEDA Board, where she has served for the past two years. Her passion for economic development and its vital role in the city’s growth inspired her to continue making a difference. Lisa has been a dedicated leader in Mesquite, serving on the 4B Quality of Life Corporation (MQOLC) Board since 2021 and the MEDA Board since its inception in 2022. As President of the Dallas College Retiree Association, she continues her passion for workforce development and community impact. With over 40 years in Mesquite, Lisa values giving back and supporting initiatives that benefit the entire community. During March, we are celebrating Women’s History Month by honoring the incredible contributions and leadership of women in our community. Today, we spotlight Nadine Ward, a dedicated leader who has made a lasting impact on Mesquite’s economic and community development. Nadine has served as President of the Mesquite Economic Development Advisory (MEDA) Board since its inception in 2022 and has been a member of the 4B Quality of Life Corporation Board since 2004, leading as President for three separate terms. She also serves on the Planning and Zoning Commission. Her involvement in Mesquite’s growth dates back to the first referendum for the Texas 4B economic development sales tax in 1997, where she volunteered to educate the community on its benefits. Her passion for civic engagement continues to shape Mesquite’s future. Her advice to women looking to step into leadership? Find something you’re passionate about, do your research, and understand the commitment because making a difference starts with knowledge and dedication.
