Honduras’ 2017 Tax Code reform marked a major shift—from a worldwide tax system to a territorial one. Under this model, only income generated within Honduras is taxed. In 2000, Guatemala enacted sweeping new legislation on intellectual and industrial property, aligning its framework with global standards recommended by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). According to María Mercede Marroquín de Pemueller of Meritas member firm Marroquín, Pérez & Asociados, S.C. (Guatemala City, Guatemala), these reforms not only modernized local regulations but also strengthened compliance with key international agreements such as the Paris Convention, PCT, and TRIPS—laying the groundwork for free trade agreements with the U.S. and the EU.
