What’s a common mistake that first-time CEOs make? Picture this: You’re a first-time CEO. This is one of the most exciting (and daunting) times of your life, especially as you build your team. You want to bring others along and empower them to contribute. These are people you trust and who support your vision. They’re fans, former colleagues, and possibly friends and family. But deep down, you know the hard truth: some are not equipped for the job. I’ve seen this mistake happen countless times, and it’s one of the most crucial lessons I can share with all first-time founders. Hiring based solely on loyalty is not an ingredient in the recipe for startup success. Of course, it’s easy to fall into the trap of hiring people based on enthusiasm or loyalty. Yes, relationships matter in business, but early-stage companies need more than just passion. You need a team that ✔️ Has proven experience and has successfully done the job before ✔️ Can solve complex problems ✔️ Brings a sense of urgency, resilience, and intellectual curiosity It is unlikely that everyone in your inner circle possesses these traits, and you can’t be afraid to make tough decisions when necessary! Successful CEOs are not just visionaries—they’re leaders who assemble teams that execute. And don’t give up on those loyal relationships! Just because somebody isn’t ready to join the team today doesn’t mean they won’t be tomorrow. Support them on their journey, which may or may not ultimately include working at your company.
