Ever considered serving as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) board member or an advisory board member? I have been on four boards. I love this part of my life. It feeds me. A few things to consider: • No riches here but your efforts may change the lives of others. • A great experience when your values and passions align with nonprofit’s core values and mission. • New outlet to use your professional expertise, academic training, and creative energy. • Can take lots of time so set up guardrails. • When board members work collaboratively without any grandstanding, it’s amazing. • In early-stage nonprofits, you may work on operational matters and fundraising.  • In mid-size/partially developed orgs, the shift will be less operations and more executing a strategic plan, fundraising, and improving infrastructure with the executive director. • In large nonprofits, it’s all about fundraising, talking up the nonprofit in community groups and increasing visibility among potential stakeholders. If you have questions, feel free to reach out to me.

  • To our clients and candidates: We are nearing the celebration of our 30th year as a legal search firm. • This goes out to folks who have been laid off or have been out of the market for a while and wish to re-enter. A few thoughts: 1.     If you have been laid off, if you are able to handle your change without feeling immediate financial stress or other pressures, take two weeks off to decompress, reflect and reorient yourself. It is critical that your recent experiences not dictate who you are as a professional. You want and need the ability to think clearly in order to marshal your energy to move forward in a positive direction. Consider how you feel - angry, demoralized, misled, used, insulted, or feel like the place you have been was a drag and did not support your longer-term career objectives. Alternatively, if it was a great place to work, you may be bummed that you got laid off.   2.     If any of the above strikes a chord with you, dig deep to understand your feelings rather than push them away. You don’t want them to interfere with new opportunities. Focus on the following: a.     What skills did you sharpen in your last position? b.     What new skills did you pick up to help advance your career? c.     Who are your mentors, both within the work world and in your private life? What did you learn from each of these people? d.     What precisely are you looking for as you are interviewing? Employers want to know why you are interviewing with them. They look for an alignment between your skillset and their needs. Additionally, cultural fit between the parties can be an absolute key to success or failure in a new position. e.     Again, why are you interviewing with a particular employer? What do you see that intrigues you? Drill hard into the position description and background of a potential employer. Be ready to cover what they appear to want and what you will deliver. f.       Employers want new employees who are enthusiastic, motivated, disciplined, take their careers seriously, and, at the end of the day, will play well with others in the sandbox. g.      There is nothing like preparation to move forward!
