  • April 11–17 is Black Maternal Health Week. According to the CDC, Black women in the U.S. are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. This alarming disparity is linked to unequal access to quality healthcare, higher rates of underlying chronic conditions, and social determinants of health. Black women are at greater risk for: Preeclampsia (a serious blood pressure condition), with a 60% higher rate than white women, according to the Preeclampsia Foundation. Postpartum hemorrhage and blood clots. Preterm birth and low birth weight infants. Limited access to paid maternity leave through their employers. Factors like lower insurance coverage, socioeconomic challenges, limited access to transportation, unsafe housing, and reduced partner support compound these health risks. As highlighted in the article “Black Maternal Mortality — The Elephant in the Room” (2020), these systemic issues demand attention and action. According to KFF, in 2022, individuals aged 13 to 24 accounted for 19% of new HIV infections. Among those, 50% were Black and 30% were Hispanic. Stigma remains especially prevalent in this age group, often contributing to challenges with medication adherence and increased mental health issues. To learn more, visit https://lnkd.in/dgqg4CjQ

Today we celebrated the grand opening of our first in-house community Pharmacy at Moreau, located near the busy Exit 17 corridor and right next to Moreau Family Health. This new pharmacy is open to everyone—whether you’re a Hudson Headwaters patient or not—and marks an important milestone as we look to replicate this model across our region. Huge thanks to our partners at the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce, Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce and South Glens Falls Chamber for supporting today’s ribbon cutting. And thank you to our patients, providers, board members, clinical pharmacy team, colleagues and community leaders who joined us for the celebration.

  • Though schizophrenia only affects about 1% of the population, the economic and financial consequences of the disease are enormous. It is a complex mental illness that has no cure though can be managed with medication. Long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotic medications show potential benefits in improving adherence and reducing relapses in people with schizophrenia.  In our latest article for the Pharmacy Times, Angie Oster, PharmD and Cara Coladonato, PharmD, BCMTMS take a closer look at LAIs and how they can work in the treatment of schizophrenia.
