Half of income-eligible households miss out on Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) benefits every year, simply because they don’t apply. In a recent interview with NBC10 Philadelphia, Philadelphia Gas Works' Dan Gross shared that many leave money on the table, even though one in three PGW customers is eligible for support. Helena Best, a retired registered nurse and a resident at Pennrose's Falls Ridge, used to put off buying food and medicine to save money for her bills. Then, about five years ago, she applied for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which provides applicants up to $1,000 in support with their utility bills. The support Helena was granted allowed her to stop worrying about setting aside money to heat her apartment. "It helps families to keep their heat on during the coldest months,” said Philadelphia Gas Works' Nyisha Chapman in an interview with The Philadelphia Citizen about the program's importance. “It reduces financial stress and ensures our vulnerable residents, specifically our seniors and our low-income households, stay safe and warm." Falls Ridge's community impact coordinator helped Helena fill out her application. Shannon Mowery, Vice President of Community Impact at Pennrose, emphasized that there are multiple barriers as to why income-eligible people don't know about LIHEAP or don't have the necessary information to apply. Read more about #LIHEAP, its impact, and its future ahead of the 4/18 application deadline: https://lnkd.in/detzdX_8 #AffordableHousing #CommunityDevelopment #MyPGW
