Uncollected and improperly disposed waste is a large contributor to plastic pollution around the world – especially in Indonesia, where Alner , a digital platform that offers products with returnable packaging, has focused its efforts. Since being announced as a Mastercard Strive Innovation Fund winner in 2023, Alner has reached over 1,000 micro-retailers in Jakarta with training, personalized support, and gamified features, where retailers can compete for better discounts and rewards. Not only does this partnership reduce waste and increase recycling and reuse, but it's also empowering small businesses to make extra income without having to significantly change their operations. Just in time for National Pet Day on April 11, the Mastercard Economics Institute has revealed some paws-itively purr-fect insights about the growing pet economy globally. 🐾 Melbourne, Australia, paw the biggest increase in pet spending between 2019 and 2024, reinforced by the country's reporting of an 80% increase in dog registrations over five years. 🐾 The pandemic has unleashed a wave of pet ownership, leading to increased spending on premium pet food, grooming, and health services. 🐾 In the U.S., Pittsburgh tops the Pet Lovers Index. Overall, pet spending in the U.S. has jumped by 51.3% between 2019 and 2024. 🐾 While brick-and-mortar stores are still the most popular option for pet owners across multiple countries, e-commerce and subscription services have been clawing away market share for years. As we enter Earth Month, we’re excited to spotlight Acción Andina, one of Priceless Planet Coalition's partners that is planting trees to restore a million hectares of forest along the mountainous spine of South America. As the Andes has lost some 95% of its native forest and up to 50% of its glaciers, the project aims to build resilience and create a community-based model that can be replicated across the globe. Acción Andina is mixing traditional local knowledge with artificial intelligence and high-tech imaging technology to identify where to plant trees to protect city-critical watersheds, and the Priceless Planet Coalition is working with its partners Conservation International and the World Resources Institute to secure the future of these vital water sources and carbon sinks – all of which creates jobs, builds leadership capacity, prevents forest fires, and protects biodiversity. We know that a thriving economy requires a healthy planet, so we’re working with the right partners and local communities to protect the natural spaces that are vital to our shared prosperity. Despite earning prestigious degrees, college students score only around 50% on basic financial literacy tests — leaving many of them unprepared to build wealth after graduation. Mastercard and Goalsetter are tackling this gap, using a money management boot camp for college students to understand what kind of approach works best. Participants improved financial literacy by 29.4% and dramatically increased their confidence in making investment decisions.
